D&D 4E If 4e fails you, what then?

I miss the old Cthulhu - not the d20 crap.
I know, it was not very playable, characters did not last long, some parties mostly composed of former university professors too soon adopted the "fire in the hole" policy...
Still, most times, a five star ambiance all the way!

Not playable? I've played in or run several successful campaigns and a bunch of one-shots. Very playable, and still in print last I checked.

D&D for me will always be OD&D(74) [cue Diaglo], Classic D&D (Moldvay or Mentzer, but preferably Moldvay) and even 1E. Sure, I'll give 4E a try. But if I don't care for it, I've got tons of D&D. I've got Gygax D&D. I'm set. 4E... 4E is gravy. If it's cool, then cool. If not, I spend that discretionary dough on Flames of War or 40K or some other game that I also like.

For the record, d20 Cthulhu rocks!

I'd give up on running any tabletop games until a 4E revision or 5E. D&D is hardly my only hobby, so I would just focus on other things.

Of course, I don't expect this situation to come up. 4E has been looking good for a while now.

If 4e fails me, I plan to kidnap Mike Mearls and Monte Cook and lock them in a dungeon with crayons, paper, and dice (with the d4's rounded).

When they have created the perfect roleplaying game, I will release them.

Nah. Having the (very real) feeling that a shotgun shot in the dark could lead you to paradise is an experience one cannot possibly know in D20.

Still, I admit there were developments, but not according to my personal Cthulhu game flavor.

Hey I already did a thread about this!!!! Copycat!!!!!

Ah who am, I kidding 95% of the the threads on this forum have been done before anyways.

I second that.
Still, what is perfect in itself can be subject to debate for several eras...

Let's turn the two into liches for life spanning purposes?
(and the whole gaming community for identical reason)

Of course, there are dozens of other systems out there.

Dozens? Try hundreds, at least. Probably thousands.

So if 4th ed fails me, I'll just play any other the other games that I've been itching to play for so long.

Lesse,

Maybe back to Deadlands: HoE or Weird West, oWoD: Vampire, 3.5 DnD, SW Saga or WEG SW, Cthulu one shots, etc.

I'm not hurting for things to play. That said, I'm not worried about it flopping either.

I don't anticipate this at all. I'm in the "95% of it sounds really fun" camp, and I think anout 3% will end up being non-issues in actual play. If it were an utter failure... I'd likely finish out my current SWSE campaign and then go to Shadowrun. I've still got plenty of 3.5E books and I'm not against seeing what Paizo develops (I've never gotten any of their previous products, and won't likely buy in if I dig 4e. I don't need two fantasy games.) I skipped a lot of D&D 2nd Edition, I could weather another bad edition through other games as well.
