    Playing Shadar-kai

Wow, just plain great. Skimmed it, but most striking thing so far is the Chain Expert multiclass feat. Double Weapon with Reach that's also a light blade!!! Good times!

    D&D Insider: Losing your toys

I'm paying for D&D Insider purely for Dragon. The character buildier is delicious frosting on an already substantial cake. Right now I'm drooling over the fascinating Shadar-kai article - haven't finished it but I'm already looking forward to some of the options available and to further...

Chicago Gameday XXII Planning Thread; our date is March 21st

I'd like to DM/Coordinate/Assist with 4E PHB 2 D&D Release Event. Is this something we'd like to integrate into the Chicago Games Day, or run concurrently/seperately?

DDI Subscribers: Are you satisfied with your subscription?

Totally satisfied! For the price of 2 books, I get the equivelent of 12 books, Character builder (wow, best software for tabletopping I've seen so far) and previews of new books. Its pure goodness.

Next Deities & Demigods (now with poll!)

I voted other. I want to see more stuff on the gnomish pantheon!

    Toughness vs Durable

Toughness is almost always better early on, from then it depends on your playstyle. Toughness is an up front bonus. Durable is a bonus that is only useful when you are on your last healing surge and wish you had 2 more. Durable may mathematically give more HP, but only if you use every...

How much money do plan on purchasing 3E/OGL products this year?

I've already spent about $100+ on Conan D20 this year alone... though I hope to taper that down a bit. Probably will spend twice that an 4E products though....

Defenders require bad AI from monsters

If it seems right that a monster runs, it runs. I've done it a few times - it is a great way when the battle is obviously won but going to grind on a few more to save some time, get the party moving a long and keep the action up. The bad position a defender puts a monster in isn't...

items that are just better (aka power creep)

I've got a feeling that Cannith Goggles are a misprint. It was probably intended to be level 1X or something. In the exact same Dragon 365, page 59, you'll see Ruby Lenses. Same property bonus (+2 perception) and a minor daily power. The daily power is slightly better on the ruby lenses, so...

    RIP Veteran's Armor (2008-2009)

Alas, poor veteran's armor, I hardly knew ye. My wife just bought one, used it once, and now she must put it on the wall, never to be used again. Though I must admit, it isn't dead, just comatose. The other ability is rather decent for a level 2 armor. Had I never seen the daily power, I...

    LARPing

I play in a LARP up in North East Wisconsin. Its live action style, so boffer weapon ahoy! Course, its a rather small game, with 20 or so people instead of those mass games with dozens. Rules are basically a skill based system for a fantasy game. www.newlarp.com

D&D 4E D&D 4E and psychology: Hit chance too low?

I think 4e is right at the sweet spot. Players hit and get hit often enough that they have fun (though streaks do occur) but at the same time need to be strategic enough that they are rewarded for flanking and teamwork.

What can Google Trends tell us about D&D?

Whenever I do searches for D&D products, I use 4E and probably don't even do the D&D. For example, before the character builder beta, I'd search "4E character sheets" I feel just typing "D&D" is far too vague to get anything useful. I'll just end up with a bunch of out of date stuff. But...

    Ask Wizards Response for 12/22

Yes. I don't see anywhere we can gain a feat twice, or a skill twice. If somehow one gains a double skill, the second simply doesn't apply. Since you have to gain a level to get sneak of shadows (as is implied, you wouldn't take a 1st level feat with a skill you already have) why don't you...

DM's perspective: How to deal with the flaming sphere

It depends on the intelligence of the monsters. Smart monsters: "Hey, that wiz just made this fire that's attacking me and my allies, it looks like he's controlling it still. Lets take him out because he's clearly a very dangerous threat" Dumb Monsters: "Ack Fire!!!! Can't hurt it. Ooh...

    Adventurer's Vault 2 Playtest

I would agree with the orb statements: It does need an attack roll - anything auto-hit sounds really really bad. It should be sustain standard - its a sick, powerful effect. It would be better as an expensive consumable - I'd get tired of this if every RPGA event after level 20 I could...

    Sleeping in armor?

My character's don't sleep, so its not much of an issue. I pretty much assume that they are all Jack Bauer on 24 and just don't sleep/pee/eat while the action is going on.

    Adventurer's Vault 2 Playtest

Orbs: Yikes, this sounds extremely cool at first but how often do you want to fight in the same 5x5 square? Basically, you're dooming your playgroup to play on in the same tile once every time you gather together.... Tattoos: This is actually really cool, most of them aren't very strong...

4th ed Druid over wizard? Over 3.5 druid?

The at-will area of effect spells for wizard are just plain better - sure the druid gets versatility and some cool special efffects, but the druid at-will needs to hit and needs to be centered on a target. That's a big difference, as a wiz can hit non-adjacent minions.

Does everyone take Superior Weapon Proficiencies?

Part of the reason is that Superior weapon training is a level one or none type feat - you either start with it or don't get it at all (usually). Also, since AV is fairly new, the feat also is a great one to try out the new shiny stuff with. I'm guessing over time we'll see less and less as...
