    Spider-Man 3 Villain

I only ever collected McFarlane's Spider Man, so take this with a grain of salt. But to me, the "classic" Spidey villians are: Green Goblin, Doctor Octopus, Kingpin, Lizard, and Venom. Those are the ones that just about everybody knows about, including people who aren't big-time comics-fans...

    Are they dead or not?

Sorry, I didn't mean to imply that. I think it's up to the characters to know their stats/status. Whethere's that's hit points, ability damage, or whatever else. But I can certainly see a new player not being familiar with the "Con 0 => Dead" rule, or the "Con 0 from wraith attacks => rising...

    Are they dead or not?

I dunno; the rat-bastard in me want to say, "He's not dead--he's UNDEAD!" When the wraiths killed him with the Con drain, he became a ghost as well. He just doesn't realize it yet. Explain away the Xorn fight with the fact that he's able to physically manifest--and he was doing so during...

    Explaining 3.5 to a 2nd Edition Veteran

I've recently welcomed 2 new players into my campaign. They've played D&D back in highschool, back in the days of 2nd edition. So I've been tasked with bringing them up to speed. How would you explain 3.5 to such a person? What are the most fundamental changes that a player would need to be...

How would you rule this attack?

I'd go for 12d6, Ref save for half (DC = DC of the shatter spell). Requires a readied action to set off. If the golem failed its Ref save, I'd have it be Prone and Entangled. Normally, I'd require a DC 20 Str check to lift the gate. I'd also allow a DC 15 Str check to tear off whatever body...

Newbie DM question: How many encounters per day?

That's a pretty broad theory, though. And following the book could lead to a pretty boring game. In my experience, you have to think about more than just "# encounters/day". I tend to think of it in terms of "# encounters/session". My group doesn't want to spend a full 4-hour session doing...

Scroll spell casting blunder - could this happen?

Aw, screw the rules. :) It sounds like a cool idea, so go with it. If you feel obligated to follow the RAW, I could see this happening with a "Polymorph Any Object" scroll easily. Spider

To railroad or not to railroad?

There's always the "This is your punishment for getting into that bar brawl last night" hook. Have the PC's all thrown in jail for something meaningless (petty theft, bar brawl, mistaken identity). And instead of being sold into slavery, they've been given the chance to pay their debt to...

Large size creature grappling a medium provoke AoO?

As I understand it, you're correct by the RAW. However, I houserule it the way your player suggests. Grappling is one of the stickiest parts of 3.5 combat. I've seen it used to absurdly good effect (PC ogres grappling plate-wearing fighters, and dropping them in a lake). In my opinion, it's...

Help me defend a pass. (My players go away!)

The druid could be really nasty here, especially if he's got the feat that allows him to cast spells while wildshaped: Just looking at the druid's spell list: Air walk can get the horse and rider to pass. Spike stones, in conjunction with some good luring, can be used to slow down/kill/disable a...

    A D&D Test

Crazy. Yeah, that's the point of this thread. I'm way more interested in the bizarre, absurd, and downright silly artifacts of the rules. I know I wouldn't let a dead character have a 10% chance to spontaneously get up and move around. Ultimately, I think it would be great to compile all of...

    A D&D Test

You know, I always wondered where all the random undead came from in D&D. Thanks, Hyp! (Great responses, by the way. This is a very entertaining read. :)) Spider

Help me defend a pass. (My players go away!)

I probably don't need to point this out, as you seem to have plenty of DMing experience...but if it were *my* group, they'd say "Screw this" and find another way to traverse the 2 miles. Is there anything forcing them to take the heavily guarded and easily defended route? What's to stop them...

    Disguise and taking 20

For the sake of argument, what would you do in the following situation: Bonzo: OK, I'm done doing your makeup Frank (rolls a disguise check, gets a 15). What do you think, guys? Bill: I dunno, Bonzo. (rolls a spot check, gets a 17 after all his bonuses) He still really looks like Frank...

    Rogues flanking at range?

Hyp, I'm always amazed at your ability to see the rules more clearly than anyone else. And I'm fascinated by the above. So in the interest of not hijacking this thread, I've started a new one. Would you mind visiting that thread, and explaining these weird permutations? Spider

    A D&D Test

In another thread, Hypersmurf made some interesting contentions about some rules permutations. Not wanting to hijack that thread, I'm asking about them here: Would you mind explaining? And to open the thread up a bit: I'd love to come up with a "D&D rules test". Basically, put forth some...

    Repository of free PDF adventures?

Thanks for all the responses! When I said "a few," I was sorta referring to the 3 or 4 that I had looked at for 3rd level characters. You're right--I'm being greedy! :) Any idea why the EN World adventures were taken down? Too much bandwidth, or too much copyright problems? Any chance...

    Disguise and taking 20

My thinking is that after each attempt, your buddies take 20 on their spot checks. If they see a flaw, you do it again. If they can't recognize the subject, that was your last attempt. Spider
