I can't say I'm keen on Mandi, Anwar however was stylishly evil and quite amusing. Mandi is just a bit, well, annoying (sorry!).

Personally I like both. A good dust up and heroic battle is great, but I like there to be some sense behind it, and I love building personalities. So, 70% role play and 70% combat does it for me. :D

Freeport has been in EQ since commercial release, and has little to do with Green Ronin's Freeport, apart from the fact that they are, well, ports. Green Ronin were not the first people to name a place Freeport. :) Maybe we should take a look at the history of http://www.freeportusa.com/ ?

I think it's testimony to the brilliance of the idea of the game that it became so popular and people played it despite the massive flaws in the rules system. We played BD&D for a very short period before moving to another game (namely Runequest - just as deadly in some was!).
