Ranger - Twin Strike kick to the groin?

I don't allow an powers to be used with improvised weapons, or any weapons that the players are not proficient with.

Light vs Dark or vice versa

The cloud of darkness supersedes all light sources, whether its the sun, a torch, or an object glowing from the light spell (which for all intents is a glorified torch). No light functions inside the cloud of darkness, because the ability specifically states that it blocks all line of sight...

Is it just me...or do all monsters have insane initiative?

Lurkers get a +4 bonus. Skirmishers get a +2 bonus. Soldiers get a +2 bonus. (DMG 184). All monsters get their Dex modifier, plus half level, plus role bonuses as shown above, and all of them work out correctly with that math in mind.

Do Monsters know about a Fighter's Combat Challenge?

Does the monster know that the fighter has marked it...lets think about it... The fighter is harassing you, wont let you move, constantly in your face, and wont let you do anything within impeding your actions. Yes, of course they are aware of it.

Urban chase Skill Challenges + Group skill checks

I think you're looking at this in stark black and white, unimaginative terms. Think about how a pack of lions chase a gazelle. They don't all run flat out and the first one to get it gets the kill. Likewise the Gazelle doesn't run straight, flat out sprinting until it gets away or is eaten...

A talk on the concept of "failures" in a skill challenge (no math, comments welcome)

As long as the consequences for failure are felt by the group in a real tangible way, I don't see any problem with difficult challenges that may result in failure. DMs just have to avoid having no consequences for failure, or having the adventure grind to a halt because of failure. As long as...

A talk on the concept of "failures" in a skill challenge (no math, comments welcome)

I am really enjoying skill challenges; my players seem to really get into them, and they are coming up with some amazing uses for their skill checks - my groups fighter seems to find just the perfect use for his three skills (Streetwise, Athletics, Endurance), which is quite extraordinary what...

    Loss of imagination

Magic Missile At-will * arcane, force, implement Standard action Target: one creature Roleplaying: You choose one word you have to say. Alternatively you can select a short descriptive sentence or make a complex gesture. Also, if you have a supply of spell components available to help you...

A discussion of Keith Baker's post regarding the Skill Challenge system

I ran a bunch of sample skill challenges straight room the book, but using easy difficulty numbers of 15 instead of 20. the heroes won two thirds of the challenges. Also, I tend to hand out +2 bonuses whenever I get a really good in depth description of what the PC is planning to do - the +2...

My take on it all. (A Rant of sorts, feel free to ignore)

Minions die. That's their job. I'll list a few sources from film and screen that prove this concept: Fellowship of the Ring Braveheart Kill Bill Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom Goldeneye 24 Austin Powers Terminator The Dirty Dozen Star Trek Return of the Jedi Pirates of the Caribbean The...

My take on it all. (A Rant of sorts, feel free to ignore)

The cinematics of the game are very evident in 4E. The fight in Fellowship of the Ring, between the Cave Troll and it's Orc minions, and a group of 9 PCs, would be a perfect fight. The Orcs are minions (Show me one in the movie that didn't die from 1 hit). The cave troll is an elite opponent...

My take on it all. (A Rant of sorts, feel free to ignore)

Dude, it takes all of 5 minutes to adjust any monster in that book to any level you want it to be. The book cant have every monster at every level in 288 pages. If you want something other than whats in there, just do it and stop crying about it. Take ghosts for instance. The MM provides you...

My take on it all. (A Rant of sorts, feel free to ignore)

I think you're looking for the MM to provide you everything you need, and you want it to replace all the fun and work of adventure creation. In 3E, all the monsters shown were at their weakest point - unless you have your heroes fight a group of baseline monsters, the monsters needed further...

Tauren Player Race [more Warcraft races to come]

I'd change to +2 Str, +2 Con. All good. Tauren in WoW can only be Warriors, Druids, Hunters, and Shaman. I'd suggest you change the prefered classes to: Fighter, Ranger, Warlord. Paladin and Priest are definitely not tauren classes.

D&D 4E 4e Ranger: New God of Damage? Armor Splinter + Blade Cascade + High Wisdom Ranger

I added a creature into the waning days of my 3E game that had the same power (I originally saw this on a skeleton from a 4E source somewhere and it inspired me). The monster only needed a 3 to hit the Fighter in the group, and his damage was 1d8+7 (Other monsters I was using did double slams...

D&D 4E What is your favorite part of 4e?

I realy enjoy the simplification of the adventure creation process for Dungeon Masters. So much of my time in 3E was spent making monsters, adding on templates and levels, and advancing monsters, that I didn't have enough time to devote to room descriptions, vivid monster descriptions, and just...

    D&D 4E 4E Item price parity.

The romans equipped all their soldiers in plate chestpieces etc 2 thousand years ago - they aren't that expensive. Plate in many ways is easier to make than scale or chain, but require a bit more in raw materials. To make chain you need to take the iron and wrap it in hundreds of rings, cut...

D&D 4E Just some hand to hand combat in 4e

The Githzerai have longheld traditions in hand to hand combat, and their race has many monks. I think this is a microchasm of things to come in terms of the monk class.

D&D 4E Is it just me, or do damaging effects suck in 4E?

You also add in your magic implement plus to the damage on that spell, so if you're using a +5 wand you add another 5 damage, not to mention feats and whatnot that can upgrade your damage as well.

    Fourth Edition is a MASTERPIECE!

I wrapped up my final 3E adventure last night, and we'll begin a brand new 4E campaign in two weeks. I can't wait! Everything I see from a Dungeon Master's standpoint is a total upgrade in my ability to create an storyline with exciting and compelling combat, suspenseful and interesting...
