    D&D 4E D&D 4E Tips/Tricks/Advice

We actually use chips for everything, a holdover from out savage worlds games. Bloodied, for monsters as well as PCs, APs, lasting 'save ends' effects, surges. That way everyone can tell at a glance if 'bloodied' abilities come into play, if someone is in need of a rest or a save, etc. I'm...

    D&D 4E Class-free 4E

Well, my reasons for separating the power sources would be that i think that significant versatility should come up with a price. It may not be necessary for balance, but it encourages common archetypes without requiring them. I am curious, though, why, if you wanted to 'blow the whole thing...

Stealth - Starting Fresh - Slate Wipe.

Nope, I'd go with all the time, or pretty darn close, given the ranger's higher damage weapons and multiple attacks. Assuming no feats spent, and both taking the highest damage weapon possible while keeping the +3 weapon prof bonus (to keep the math simple), and assuming a 50% hit chance...

    Uncouncious inspiring word

On a similar note, it seems weird that the warlord's passive abilities (Combat Leader and Commanding Presence) function when the warlord is unconscious/asleep. It doesn't seem that it would be very inspiring to see him lying face down in the mud after being spanked by some thug. We treated it as...

    Warlock, which pact is best?

None of them reference int? Every single Warlock Encounter power has a secondary effect which benefits from high int, provided you are of the right pact.

    Zombies and Skeletons

That ranged attack just makes the skellies look that much better on top of their generally superior stats. I agree that the extra 20% damage is significant, it doesn't call for 2 additional levels. Level 9 and 13 minions only do 6 damage for the most part so it's not like damage goes up fast for...

    Zombies and Skeletons

So what's the deal with Decrepit Skeletons and Zombie Rotters? Both are minions; Skeletons have higher defenses, initiative, perception, speed, as well as a ranged attack and yet the zombies are a higher level and grant 50% more xp. Huh? One more point of damage isn't worth that much.

    Fighter Level 2 Utilities

Well, being bloodied isn't required to use the power since it's not listed as a trigger or a requirement. A stance lasts for encounter/5 minutes but the effect says you get regen when you're bloodied. So you can activate it any time you want and at the start of any turn if you're bloodied you...

    Explain the Warlock to me.

You can still only apply curse damage once per round anyway. However it still allows Pact Boon to kick in when anyone kills your cursee.

    D&D 4E 4E Superhero Game?

But we already have M&M. :)

A 6 PC Optimized Adventure Group (custom made)

Clerics only get two rituals. Speaking of which, the wizard would be better served with a ritual other than Repose since the cleric has to take it. Maybe either one of the cleric's extra rituals?

    D&D 4E As Much As I Complain About 4E...

Yup, and this is exactly the reason my universal system of choice has changed from gurps to savage worlds in the past few years and why I'm considering (decided, really) running my first dnd game since 1e.

    No tracking?

Hear, hear. I remember playing a 2e rogue with the tracking 'proficiency' AND having a kit making him a scout and he still had a -6 to track because he wasn't a ranger. Grr.

How To Kill An Adult Black Dragon Without Dying Of Boredom

I assume the cleric no longer had Spiritual Weapon - wow, that's a cool power, auto CA for everyone, whee! Yeah, an orb wizard may have helped a bit to contain it for a couple of turns but overall it would cost some damage dealt. Warlocks with the right powers can be very good solo controllers...

Ranged 'fighters' can't come to the dance?

While I'm happy with many of the changes in 4e but something that is starting to bug me is that str melee is now king, as opposed to spellcasters. Ranged strikers seem to be the red-headed step-child now. Wizards and clerics have their own thing to do and aren't primary damage dealers any more...

    Knocking Godzilla Prone

That's all well and good, but, speaking as the proud owner of a 25th level rogue in a recent 3e game, I'm glad to see [immune to crit/sneak attack] gone. Too many undead/automoton/what-have-you at high levels making me useless for entire sessions or arcs.

    House rule combat maneuvers

Disarm: This should probably allow the original attack to use dex instead of str to allow for fencer type characters and rogues to do this. Takeaway: With this maneuver, I would expect wizards and warlocks to be implement-less in round 2 or 3. The basic melee attack for failure isn't much of a...

Am I missing something? Spellcasters and armor?

Yeah, all you have to do is take a look at feat requirements to see that a fighter with s16 d13 i13 may be more viable than 18 10 10; He's at least more interesting with more options. The -1 to hit and damage is more than made up for by feat options.

    Extended Rest House Rule

I'm pretty sure you can already only take one extended rest per day.

    D&D 4E hex rules for 4E?

Coming by way of gurps, champions and savage worlds, hexes come pretty easy to me as well. The trickiest part might be accounting for larger creatures. I normally wing it in my games but dnd is a lot more measure-conscious than others I play. In sw, we have fixed templates that all powers use. I...
