No tracking?

Call me crazy but I was ecstatic to see the demise of the "class specific" feats/abilities in 4E. Rogue trapfinding and ranger tracking were roadblocks to creative character creation in my experience. I think it is much better to use a skill based approach, which also encourages multiclassing just like the last edition.

Great change, perception is rogue/ranger only by default but there are several ways to gain training in it. Classes should feel special for reasons besides, "Only x class gets y ability (trapfinding!)"

Hear, hear. I remember playing a 2e rogue with the tracking 'proficiency' AND having a kit making him a scout and he still had a -6 to track because he wasn't a ranger. Grr.

Hmmm... I guess your right (about its good that its not class exclusive). But I think I was looking for some utility powers that said "I'm the wilderness guy!" for the ranger. Maybe a power that a Wisdom bonus to skill checks in the wilderness? I don't know...

Nah rangers are not the woodsmen class (and I don't understand why anyone wood need a whole class for that concept), they are ranged/two weapon fighters, possible characters spiraling from that concept are, A woodsman, an assassin, a bounty hunter, a guard, a trainee rebeluous fighter eschewing the shield training from his master for two weapons, if you allied a wilderness guy type thing to the class, it would add unwanted fluff to a few concepts for no reason, wilderness guy can now just be a flavour and added into your background.

Besides THE wilderness guy is the druid, I see the former ranger as the self sufficient guy.
