WOTC undecided over OGL/GSL. Why you should care

Assuming they're just mucking about with the terms of the GSL, I'd do exactly what I suggested above. Post on this thread that there is going to be a GSL, it's going to allow most publishers to do most of what they want, and WotC just isn't prepared to make more details public at this time...

WOTC undecided over OGL/GSL. Why you should care

So what? You're welcome to argue whether Paizo is making a smart move or a stupid move on a different thread; it's completely irrelevant to this one. Really? And here I was basing my entire self-worth on Hot or Not. You said you didn't know anyone who switched systems just because of an...

WOTC undecided over OGL/GSL. Why you should care

The only reason this thread has traction is because Clark Peterson, easily the biggest booster 4e has among the independent gaming companies and friends with a lot of industry people both in and out of WotC, is worried. I wasn't concerned until Clark said he was. I think there are a lot of...

Blog post on the feel of D&D (marmell, reynolds et all)

Two reasons. First, because abilities in 4e are more varied than 3.5, and the tactical situations which call for them are more likely to come up. For example, I'm playing a Warmage with a bonus to fire spells in a campaign right now. My third level spell list, for all intents and purposes...

WOTC undecided over OGL/GSL. Why you should care

Everyone expects the GSL is going to be more restrictive. The d20 license prevents the Book of Erotic Fantasy, for example. And products that are most likely to cannibalize WotC sales--namely incompatible game systems (Mutants and Masterminds, Spycraft)--are very likely to be prohibited as...

WOTC undecided over OGL/GSL. Why you should care

Wow. That's about the exact opposite advice you get from PR professionals. The worst thing you can do in these situations is stop talking to your customers.

Blog post on the feel of D&D (marmell, reynolds et all)

You've clearly never had the misfortune of gaming with a spiked chain wielding half-orc with Combat Reflexes and Improved Trip. With 3.5, your choices are to make combat options really powerful and really unlikely to succeed (at which point someone will build a character to exploit the ability)...

Blog post on the feel of D&D (marmell, reynolds et all)

Risk unbalancing the game? You've already unbalanced the game. Your monk is running around throwing sand in the eyes of everything, and the tactic is so successful now the rogue and fighter are doing it too. (Blind your opponent on a ranged touch attack without a save? Sign me up!) To...

WOTC undecided over OGL/GSL. Why you should care

Really, all this thread needs is a WotC employee to drop by and say "Calm down everyone. There's is going to be a GSL, and while we're still nailing down the details and it is going to be more restrictive than the OGL, we're sure it's going to allow most people to do everything they want to...

WOTC undecided over OGL/GSL. Why you should care

If the only sale for WotC it drives is a single shared copy of the PHB, it's a net positive for WotC. It's money they wouldn't have seen otherwise. More likely, the DM has run 3.5 D&D before. Maybe the whole group has. And they're trying to decide what to play for the next...

The Economics of Open Gaming - An Open Letter To WotC

Yeah, I don't see any serious distinction between the OGL and the d20. The d20 license comes with more restrictions (and it's better for the industry if WotC was to stick with the OGL) but 95% of what people want to do is permitted under the d20 license.

WOTC undecided over OGL/GSL. Why you should care

Simply put, you're wrong. The reason the OGL is a good idea for WotC is because it makes them money. It makes the whole industry money. It expands the size of the industry, and draws in more customers, which encourages sales of every product. And frankly, anything that drives sales of every...

D&D 4E 4e skill system -dont get it.

I think the only difference between a guideline and a rule is how strictly it needs to be followed. You think the difference is whether it can be followed deterministically or not. That is, literally, a semantic difference. What did you think it meant? Interestingly, your distinction is...

D&D 4E 4e skill system -dont get it.

Once again, you're arguing semantics. The rules very clearly state the level of traps and associated experience point rewards for them. The rules give very detailed instructions for calculating the CR of monsters and groups of monsters, and how to gauge how difficult an encounter will be for...

D&D 4E 4e skill system -dont get it.

I think when a rule book says "Traps at this level should do this much damage. Encounters should look like this, and be worth this much experience. Monsters should only be fought in small groups because large groups will kill the party." those are rules. Clearly you disagree. Of course, you...

Displacement - a bit wussy eh? Mirror image too...

You're welcome to home-rule that the wizard class can take abilities that are within twice their class level, while all other classes have to take abilities that are within their class level. That should power up wizards just fine. Please understand for a lot of us, that's one of the things...

Displacement - a bit wussy eh? Mirror image too...

According to what, exactly? Since we've only seen a handful of other powers at those levels, you saying it "is not 16th level potent" means absolutely nothing. You have no idea if it's balanced, because you don't know what it's balanced against. Or, if you only use it when something crits...
