Is D&D 4E too "far out" to expand the market easily?

I've got nothing against people playing on consoles. I do myself. I just think that a wide majority of videogamers are just going to stick to what feels natural and easy to pick up, like a video game, rather than bother with an RPG that is the exact duplicate of this or that video game, less the...

Is D&D 4E too "far out" to expand the market easily?

Collective memory is subconscious recollection. In other words, I'm afraid we disagree on this one. Strawman argument. I agree that dragonborn and tieflings are rooted in some form or shape in fantasy literature, legends etc. That's not what I'm talking about here. I'm saying that those *words*...

Is D&D 4E too "far out" to expand the market easily?

So you're actually agreeing with my point that 4E appeals to people who are already customers of MMOs, Star Trek, Farscape et cetera. This for me is a lost battle. Between playing on a console/PC (or watching a show on TV) with little to no hard rules to comprehend before playing, and digesting...

Goodman is clearly going to the GSL.

Does it mean that DCC 3.5 PDFs will be completely off the market? The press release seems to say so, but the terms are vague enough for it to not be the case.

What Campaign Settings will you purchase?

Planescape, Dark Sun, and any other setting that would not have been covered by third edition, potentially. IF I find the treatment appealing. I don't need to purchase FR, DL all over again.

Is D&D 4E too "far out" to expand the market easily?

It's not a problem for a noob introduced to role-playing at a game table if the DM's description is clear and appealing. It is a problem when one of the goals of 4E in and by itself is to appeal to non-gamers as an entry product to the hobby. Basically, this doesn't make the product any more...

Is D&D 4E too "far out" to expand the market easily?

Well, if you want to start snipping and belittling people instead of formulating arguments to have an actual conversation, that's your problem. Have fun on top of your ivory tower. ;)

Is D&D 4E too "far out" to expand the market easily?

I don't think you get what I was trying to say. "Dragonborn", the meme, the word-idea, is not rooted in collective memory, if you will. "Dragon" and "Dungeon" are. When you say "dragon" to anybody, anyone will be able to see their "own" version of what a dragon is. When you say "dragonborn"...

Forked Thread: Once per day non-magical effects destroy suspension of disbelief

xechnao, you are the one twisting the argument here. You said that "I bet if you asked your heroes there to confront with some schizophrenic that wanted to kill them they would piss their pants." THIS is the comment that is ridiculous. I never said anything about them not ever getting in...

Forked Thread: Once per day non-magical effects destroy suspension of disbelief

That's a ridiculous statement. Anybody that isn't properly trained to take that kind of punch/kick will almost certainly DIE or end up crippled in a real life brawl with a guy like this. There's a reason why those guys are usually prohibited (in France at the very least) to use their techniques...

Is D&D 4E too "far out" to expand the market easily?

This is one of the best thought-provoking feedbacks I've seen. This is totally spot on, in my opinion. Hammer meets nail. ___________ About Rounser: What rounser tries to say is that it's called Dungeons & Dragons, which are names that will evoke something into anybody's mind because we all...

I'm a huge fan of immersive RPing. How about you?

The poll reveals the opinions of the poller by 1/ opposing dice rolling and role-playing which in fact are not polar opposites, 2/ having on one side "I prefer deep immersing RP" and on the other "I'm here to kill something", the latter option equating dice rolling with the hormone-powered...

    Marketing criticisms miss the point

I think what people truly mean when saying WotC's marketing was a failure really is "I really felt offended by the way 4E was presented to me". That does NOT make the grievance any lesser for the one who's uttering it. I think that using a bit of psychology to try to understand what people...

    Marketing criticisms miss the point

I agree on all counts. 4E does have some merits, but these are legitimate beefs playing against it.

    I don't get what you'all are saying

As a DM, I'd rather have the players create the characters they want, how they want them to be, and then build the campaign around these characters, rather than try to shoehorn pre-defined PC "roles" into what I think is "best for the story". I would much appreciate advice on how to build a...

    I don't get what you'all are saying

If I may, in regards to the OP, Paizo's "Why do you think RP has no place in 4th Ed?" may hold some valuable arguments to the limitation of RP as perceived by the fans of the game. Not that every single point in this thread is logical and well thought-out, but some of it is.

    Which Edition?

OGL home variants (BOXM, Pathfinder). I voted Paizo as a result.
