D&D 4E Are 4E powers mimicking poor playability of Dodge?

I think that writing the bonuses on notecards and handing them to the targeted player will help a lot. I think it'll be harder to forget a bonus if you're holding something that says you've got it.

What books describe a good magical world?

Well, in the case of Raise Dead, you should fear death because if you don't get raised within a week, you can't be. So if you're body isn't found, you're dead. Also, if you're killed by a death effect, you're dead. If they take you're head, you're dead. Raise Dead is an insurance, not a...

Design & Development: Warlord Article UP!

The term Bull Rush at least has the advantage of being part of the English language. And anyway, in 4th Ed it would be "Copper Bull Rush" or somesuch.

    Diagonal wonkiness scenarios

The second one does seem like something that would bite the DM from time to time. He'd always have to check to make sure that hazards were shaped such that avoiding them had a cost. Not something that'll come up every day, to be sure, but something that would be annoying when it does happen...

Per Encounter Powers Outside of Encounters

Note that this tactic does increase the amount of time you need to rest to recover HP from 5 minutes to 5minutes*the number of healing surges you want to use. This could get quite long.

    New Player's Handbook Cover Art!

I'm college-age, and I play with a college group, and that cover artwork doesn't appeal to us either. On the other hand, we're atypical enough that using us as a focus group for a mass-market add campain would be kinda dumb (On the other other hand, though, you have to wonder just how typical...

D&D Designers answer Slashdot crowds questions

Actually, what I got out of that was that they didn't want to have to make the online tools compatible with the 3.5 rules. Which makes sense. If you're going to majorly revamp your game, and simultaneously release digital tools to work with it, you don't want to release the new rules as an...

    Cascade effect of rule changes

The magic system is what you end up wrestling with if you try to fix class balance. The magic item problem stems from the fact that there are certain numbers which are assumed to scale by level which do not in fact scale unless you have the right magic items; AC is the obvious one, but saves...

    Immediate need for house rules?

I'll be putting diagonal movement back the way it was. Also, unless there is already a mechanism to ensure that the fighter isn't always hit by an Area of Effect attack if the Rouge is, I'll be reversing the math on Saving Deffences to turn them back into Saving Throws.

    Class Granularity

I prefer a low to moderate number of classes, but each class must be flexable enough to enable a variety of concepts. SWSE is pretty good with this, IMO, while many of the 3.x classes were not.

    Shemeska's Planescape Storyhour (Updated 29 Jan 2014)

Don't worry, we all did. We're just that impatient. I blame these last few updates. You've really done a good job of building up tension here. The down side is, we just can't wait to find out what happens next!

The Devil's in the Details: Slavicsek reveals the Pit Fiend in all its glory

Finally responding to a couple of things from upthread (way, way upthread): First, the problem with the fly speed is the clumsy manuverablity, plus having to work in 3D. So while he can fly up to fight, I'd prefer if he didn't have to, for reasons of simplicity (buzzword, much?). Having a...

The Devil's in the Details: Slavicsek reveals the Pit Fiend in all its glory

Well, it's certainly simpler, but if that's the whole entry I don't like it. 1. As has already been noted, after his big first round he has nothing new to pull out. 2. He has no depth. He really has only one viable course of action: Get into aura range (or at least Teleport range) and...

The Devil's in the Details: Slavicsek reveals the Pit Fiend in all its glory

Yeah, I think you're right. I tried the same thing, but I tried to use Wis for Religion. But Religion was a Knowledge, so it should be Int, and 19+5=24. In Saga, skills were 1/2 level + ability mod, +5 for training +5 for focus. So this looks to be the same system. Only the skills with...

The Devil's in the Details: Slavicsek reveals the Pit Fiend in all its glory

All ablility modifiers are consistent with 3.x modifier + 1/2 Level. We already knew this, but here's more confermation. ??? Do we know how the skills are being done?

The Devil's in the Details: Slavicsek reveals the Pit Fiend in all its glory

Action Points 1 Unless there's a recharge mechanic for Action Points, this is kind of dumb. On the other hand, now that I think about it there may well be a recharge mechanic for Action Points.

The Devil's in the Details: Slavicsek reveals the Pit Fiend in all its glory

The action point cost is not noted in the description of Infernal summons, plus the combat script has the Fiend using two standard actions in its first round. Therefor, I think the action point grants the Fiend a second standard action. So its first round looks like: Action Point action...
