Unearthed Arcana Unearthed Arcana: The ranger, revised... overcompensation?

I think the immunity to difficult terrain belongs with Natural Explorer. But yes, I agree, the "awareness" features regarding initiative and those who haven't acted yet. But I just really hope we don't lose the beast benefits in Primeval Awareness. That is possibly my favorite new thing in this...

Unearthed Arcana Unearthed Arcana: The ranger, revised... overcompensation?

I LOATHE that Multiclassing is literally the only reason we must do this, but for those concerned about it, this is the best, most reasonable, and cleanest "fix" to the issues. If Sorcerer's don't get Metamagic til level 3, pushing off Natural Explorer until 3 isn't going to kill anything. Or...

D&D 5E Explain to a guy who's never played spellcasters the difference between wizards and sorcerers

Curious, do you just mean by casting Wish to actually turn them into the Dragon? Cause it can't replicate the 9th level spell Shapechange or anything. And then you have to worry about weird DM fiat or never being able to cast the spell again (possibly).

    Fighter Archetype - Duelist

So here's my thing, and you may disagree with me, and that's totally fine. But... why does this subclass exist? What can the Duelist do that the Battlemaster and Champion cannot? The answer, currently, is pretty much nothing. Why would I play a subclass that is so similar to the other two...

    D&D 5E Human v. Dwarf FINALS!

Human supremacist here. Where our beards are just as wiry as a dwarf, and our spells as potent as an elf's. All while being considerably better looking than both (though Arwen can come by anytime *wink wink*).

    D&D 5E Why Would I Play a Ranger?

There were many, MANY, reasons why I disregarded this thread (mostly), but this was one of the bigger ones. :P

    D&D 5E Purple Dragon Knight = Warlord?

It's not necessarily my opinion. That's why I didn't add that haha. But it IS the opinion of a great many people. I do happen to have an issue with inspirational healing from 0. Which is honestly why Rally is what it is. Temp HP. It's that one, very specific thing, that is a major point of...

    D&D 5E Purple Dragon Knight = Warlord?

Well.... This was highly vitriolic and seemingly unnecessary, considering the rest of the context of my post, which you decided to leave out. Good luck to you then, hope you get what you're looking for.

    D&D 5E Purple Dragon Knight = Warlord?

You're right! I wouldn't, honestly. I'm just saying, there are reasons the designers aren't all over the idea, just the same as many fans. I highly doubt the designers really feel that passionately about these "issues" or that it is something that they feel need be addressed over other things...

    D&D 5E Purple Dragon Knight = Warlord?

What exactly is similar to this though? What other class causes... this? The difference with some of those things is broadly hand-waved with "because magic" because that works. It's a central theme of the entire game and the genre in which the game exists (mostly). The big sticking point here is...

    D&D 5E Purple Dragon Knight = Warlord?

To be fair, I think it is much more so that certain interpretations would then be forced on people as a whole. If an entire class is created in which we must accept all of these particular pre-suppositions that many do not accept, the class itself is narrowing the interpretations that a game...

Fixing the fighter: the surge problem

At what levels are you looking to compare? Honestly... Like level 6? And to which classes exactly? The Paladin? Considering you can use 6th level to grab things like Great Weapon Master or Polearm Mastery, that will bump your DPR considerably with extra bonus actions, greater reach, the ability...

    Fighter Archetype - Duelist

Yes, 7th level is also a problem. It is too much of a mechanical combat bonus. The skill check stuff is wonderful. It's in line with other fighters. Restricting the expanded crit range to finesse or light weapons doesn't do much. You're stepping very hard on the Champion's toes. And gaining...

Fixing the fighter: the surge problem

The extra ASI is massive, in terms of power. Feats are (or can be) very potent, and getting to max your attack stat by level 6 instead of 8 contributes a lot. Second Wind can be a nice way to stay in the fight. Maneuvers and extra crits, plus the extra ASI('s), really make up for plenty in terms...

    Fighter Archetype - Duelist

Well, unless I missed something, this archetype gets the benefits of both the Champion and the Battlemaster. At level 3, Improved Critical AND the new maneuvers from Panache? On top of that, it happens again at level 10 with gaining a second fighting style and additional maneuvers. Seems way...

Tweaking the ranger instead of rebuilding from the ground up.

I've done a similar project myself, but it mostly involves just fixing what I see as the major problem points. The following features are either useless or way too situational to be conducive to making a Ranger that has the right feel, in my personal opinion: Primeval Awareness Hide in Plain...

    D&D 5E Purple Dragon Knight = Warlord?

See, I'm personally glad they left this room for interpretation, in terms of what constitutes raising from 0 hp. Those that are vehemently opposed to it or can't make sense of it can rule it out, and those that have no issues with it working at 0 hp can feel more than free to rule that way...

    D&D 5E Purple Dragon Knight = Warlord?

Actually, according to many of the fans that I've discussed this with, it shouldn't be a problem. The lore explanation that I received was that one still hears while unconscious, like being roused back to consciousness. So technically this shouldn't be an issue if so many others would agree with...

Alternate Ranger's Companion - just a few tweaks.

I'm right with you until number 6 on that list. I don't think it's necessary, nor do I think it is balanced, honestly. Small characters have the disadvantage of slower speed, and not being able to use full size weapons like the longbow. That they can ride their companions is a small compensation...
