Core books include all WotC books titled "Players Handbook", "Monster Manual", and "Dungeon Masters Guide". The DM will decide whichever other books are core for their game. Any other book is optional (regardless of publisher), and can be used as source or background material.

I disagree. I most cases looking at a laptop which has a flip up screen is more distracting and less personal. It places an impediment blocking line of sight between you and your friends. A sheet of paper is flat and fits stealthily onto a table without blocking vision. And with the laptop...

I second that sentiment. Someone once suggested to me that I get together with a bunch of friends, and we all play video games on laptops. To me, that defeats the purpose of meeting with friends.

The best character sheet is a blank piece of paper. But I do like Word for creating detailed character diaries.

Laptops - Minesweeper, while the newbie figures out what he's doing. Chat programs - Not during the game. .pdf's - Not during the game. Virtual tabletops - No. Electronic dice rollers - No. Kindle - WTF? Electronic character sheet creation and update programs - No. DDI - WTF?

I have never created a 4.0E multi-class character, nor are there in any of the games I've played in. How does multi-classing work, and how will it be different from a hybrid-class?

I start with a sustainable Daily (Flaming Sphere or Icy Grasp) and control it with a minor and move action, then cast ranged spells.

Excellent job. Reward them by allowing them to pick their own bonuses for creating backgrounds. And now you have interesting storylines to weave throughout the campaign that you know your players are interested in!
