What ever happened to "role playing?"

But that's MY point. I don't know what rulebooks you read, but there was nothing in mine on roleplaying :) At least not more than there is in 3E. Maybe there was stuff on roleplaying in 2E books (I never played 1st, I basically played OD&D, 2nd Edition, and 3E), but I don't remember reading...

What ever happened to "role playing?"

Oh? Is talking to NPCs all it takes to roleplay now? Gee, with the way everyone is saying 3E is rollplay only in this thread, then I wouldn't have guessed that just talking to NPCs would be considered roleplaying by you guys :) Of course we talked to NPCs, but we tended to do it in 3rd person...

What ever happened to "role playing?"

Well, the thing is, all that matters is that you feel that way. You aren't going to get a concensus on that, and trying to get one is why this thread is still going :) I personally agree with you, at this point in my RPG life. There are others out there that may not, but for them pretending...

What ever happened to "role playing?"

I guess because myself and my group are all roleplayers I don't see the same issues in the 3E rulebooks that you do. I mean, from my perspective I don't see major differences in the books, with respect to roleplaying, than I did with the past editions. I do agree that some of the "fluff" text...

What ever happened to "role playing?"

Please see my last post. I don't consider an Elitest as having anything to do with rules. I consider it a title in which your passion for the game and YOUR game in particular, may sometimes cloud your opinions and judgement. I'm VERY guilty of that. I agree that without "roleplaying" D&D...

What ever happened to "role playing?"

You know, I really feel bad that you took the elitist comment as an insult instead of a splash of cold water that I meant it as. I classify gamers (loosely) as casual, serious, and elitist. I consider myself an elitist gamer when it comes to D&D. That's not necessarily a bad thing, I just...

Do Ray Spells suffer -4 "Firing into Melee" penalty?

I don't understand the relevance. It says there's no range penalties but what does that have to do with the -4 for firing into melee?

What ever happened to "role playing?"

I can get more on side with this. I think that WotC wrote their books to use as few words as possible (didn't they lose money on the first printings?) and to be as accessible as possible to a wider audience (I believe it was their plan to increase market share and to get new players). I...

What ever happened to "role playing?"

So have I :) If you thought I was calling anyone an elitest to bug you, then you misunderstood. I don't consider calling someone an elitest name calling. In any hobby there are certain classifications of the people doing it. I was just restating that you're an elitest (I am too) when it...

What ever happened to "role playing?"

It goes without saying that no rules are complete and without flaw - otherwise there wouldn't be errata or a FAQ :) I'm sorry if you take my general statements so literally. All I meant was in the past you might have one DM that completely roleplayed social encounters, another that had you...

What ever happened to "role playing?"

Well, considering I never used kits and I don't use Prestige Classes I'll take your world for it. Sorry - I don't use the OFFICAL kits and Prestige Classes :) I make my own campaign world. In my world "prestige classes" tend to be some sort of organization, and you'll have to join that...

What ever happened to "role playing?"

Well, my group (all of whom have been playing various RPGs for 15 years or so - the youngest is 28, the oldest 53 and the rest in our mid to late 30s) haven't noticed any change with the rules switch. I think that this theory that there is less direction for roleplaying in 3E is bunk. I...

    Precision Based Damage

I haven't looked at the 3.5 version, but the 3.0 version of the ranger didn't get the favored enemy damage when it was something immune to critical hits. This implies that it is precision-based.

    Opening Secret doors

Oh? Crap - I guess maybe I should re-read the rulebook (not DMing in over a year has made me forget everything). Most of the time my secret doors are opened with a push so essentially I do the same thing, but sometimes the where the party finds the door is nowhere near where the switch is (and...

Trip attacks don't provoke AoO if you're expert

Really? God, I've got to play more, I've forgotten everything :)

    Opening Secret doors

Depends. It could be trial and error ("I try to push open the door" - "With a grinding noise you push it open") or another search check to find the "button" that opens it. Let's say turning a statue mounted on the wall will open the secret door. If the PCs know the statue is there they may...

Do Ray Spells suffer -4 "Firing into Melee" penalty?

The -4 penalty for shooting into melee comes from avoiding trying to hit your friend in melee with the monster. If you're shooting a ray of frost into the melee it's the same difference as if you were shooting a crossbow - you're trying not to hit your friend.

Initiative - once/battle or every round?

That's cool. I will admit it does add some variance to combat which can be nice (just in my case it's more work than it's worth). Besides stun attacks, the only other real weirdness are spells that take a full round to cast. In one case it might be almost instantaneous (Last initiative in...

Initiative - once/battle or every round?

It might, but it seems too arbitrary. The big bad evil is nearly dead and goes after all the PCs. You say, "OK, this is a pivitol moment in the campaign, roll for Initiative". The BBE wins initiative and on his action teleports away. I think the players might be annoyed with that. Yes, it...

Initiative - once/battle or every round?

Agreed. My old players HATED one initiatve roll per battle. Now, when two of my players DM they use one roll per battle too as they like it much more than the old style. You also get some weirdness with the rules. Monk stuns someone on Initiative count 1 in round 1, the next round that...
