Killing the grind: phased "boss" fights

The thing that I don't get is, well... having those minions appear and possibly turn into full monsters and having more reinforcements sounds more grindy to me. A predefined number of waves of minions coming out - that's a grind right there. The books already talk (at least in DMG2? I think?)...

    Spiral Tactician question

Spiral Timing (level 11) says "... you can allow one ally you can see to reroll with a bonus equal to your Intelligence modifier. The ally must use the new result." Do they get to roll d20 + their initiative modifier + your Int mod? Or just d20 + your Int mod?

    [Trailer] Solomon Kane

Yes, but that introduced internal struggle is a bit of a cliche, really. Look at what they did with The Shadow in the 1990s film. Almost exactly the same thing as here. We can't have a hero who isn't conflicted, so we'll give him an EEEEEEEVIL past so his motivation is to redeem himself or...

    Blade of the Eldritch Knight?

Well, obviously a barbarian isn't going to go for this weapon. My question would be, for those who DO want reach, is this weapon much much better than the other options? It seems to me that my eladrin tactical warlord might be (much) better off with one of these swords and a shield, than any...

    Blade of the Eldritch Knight?

I was comparing it with the General's Weapon just last week. It seems too good.

July 2009 - What are you watching and hearing?

Sneaking something in from June, I got to see Mark Seymour (ex Hunters & Collectors frontman) play live in my city and it was great. I've been a fan of his work for 15+ years and it was great to finally see him live. Current music... I picked up the first Sam Roberts full CD (he has 3), "We...

July 2009 - What are you reading?

I'm reading "The Yiddish Policeman's Union" by Michael Chabon - mystery novel set in alternate-history Alaska after the state of Israel failed in 1948 and a lot of Jews ended up settling in Alaska. Just recently, I read "The Paladins" by Joel Rosenberg, for fun, which it was. And "The Dead...

    Suggest some books

Detective? More like "mob stories". Which doesn't make them any less awesome. And if you like Brust, and you like Garrett, go back and read the first Amber series by Zelazny, because Corwin's a character much in the same vein. :)

    CB Initiative error?

I did a quickroll deva wizard, and yeah, it looks wrong. Better mail them about it?

June 2009 - What are you reading?

How are you liking it? It's a pretty good starting point. I just finished reading Turn Coat by Jim Butcher. Good latest installment in the Dresden Files.

Is a beast companion an ally?

I have been thinking about taking Iron Dragon Charge for my warlord. The two allies who might benefit from it are our party fighter (but they may be hip deep in enemies) and our beast/bow ranger's lizard. I don't know if it'd be worth taking for a ranger/warlord compared with some other level...

May 2009: What are you reading?

"In a manner so swift that the transformation seemed under way before it happened, Lamont Cranston had completely vanished, to be replaced by that superfoe feared by all men of evil: The Shadow!" - "The Hydra", from Nostalgia Ventures' Shadow #4 (republishing "The Murder Master", and "The...

Countdown-timer at Green Ronin...? What's it all about?

I hope that this will be a success. Even though they might only sell to a small % of Dragon Age computer game players, the potential for Green Ronin to have a success with this could well be greater than if they were just making a fantasy game to try to compete with the existing pool of RPG...

Eladrin Warlord 7 retraining daily 5

Oddly, and perhaps mistakenly, I retrained my also 7th level warlord out of Pike Hedge. If the enemies are happy standing where they are, it doesn't do a whole lot. Then again, I've had some underwhelming results from Rock and a Hard Place too.

What are you reading? April 2009

Jack, your mention of Cook reminded me that I recently also read Endurance: Shackleton's Incredible Voyage by Albert Lansing. Truly... astonishing. Crazy. WW1-period, an expedition with a sailing ship (!) investigating Antarctica get trapped in the ice. They spend MONTHS stuck on the ice...

What are you reading? April 2009

I haven't posted in a while... trying to think of what I've been reading. - Jennifer Fallon's first trilogy, pretty good fantasy with a lot of politicking - the first two NESFA hardcovers of Roger Zelazny's short fiction. Awesome, amazing, falling in love with Zelazny's writing again. Last...

    Your Favorite "Light" Fantasy Books

Sherlock Holmes is a lot smarter than Garrett. :) I seem to recall that Feist wrote one book which was a sort of fantasy pastiche of Holmes, or one of the characters in one of his books was. But, that's by the by. Lighter fantasy... stuff by Patricia McKillip tends to be not DARK and...

    Glen Cook on Black Company

He's obviously a cranky guy, but some of the interview questions were kind of dumb. "Without giving anything away, what can you tell you readers about your Black Company sequence?"? I'm astonished that he's writing another BC book, because I thought it was all done now, but that's kind of...
