So why can ANYONE use rituals?

No offense, but I don't think you were Batman-ing it hard enough. You don't need damage spells when you can just coup-de-grace everything with your quarterstaff.

So why can ANYONE use rituals?

You know what else I totally hate? How come classes without any skill with magic whatsoever get to use magic items? I mean, gawd, my wizard didn't spend those years at the magic academy just so that some brutish thug of a fighter could use a magic weapon! /sarcasm Ahem. Now that we've got...

    Sleep spell....overpowered?

Peter: What you quoted was in response to phil500, not you. I haven't read through things thoroughly yet, but based on this sleep scenario it really does seem like there should be some abilities which automatically end "save to end" effects.

    Sleep spell....overpowered?

    Accidental post?

So is this indeed how it works?

Why would a single fighter be facing off against a solo monster?

"My hat of flight noes know limits"

So... lemme get this straight. Despite the numerous reasons why flight was mostly removed from the game, you have a powerful counter-argument meant to sway our opinion, and that argument goes like this: Flying is fun, flying is fun. Flying is fun! Flying is fun... Oh! And flying is fun! :P...

The pendulum swings back: Humans suck once again

I think we're overestimating the importance of racial traits because we've only seen the first few levels of abilities. Is an extra feat versus +2 to a second ability really going to matter that much when some of the higher-level abilities come into play? Sure, they'll still matter, but it...

    Flanking & Combat Advantage

The rules state fairly explicitly that "you have combat advantage against an enemy you flank" - they don't just say that a flanked opponent grants combat advantage. So basically flanking works like 3.0 and 3.5.

    Elves making people Aware

I was thinking along similar lines, but I was thinking more of a stray animal analogy: "Well, if they took in the Half-Elf and gave him food and shelter, they must be decent people, right?"

    Dying to Know

From a purely "flavour-text" perspective, I view temporary hit points as a bit of a morale boost, a little extra adrenaline to help get you through the fight. This interpretation jives pretty well with the "abstract" nature of hit points that 4E is endorsing, and it would also mean that...

    Combat Advantage and Flanking?

The sentence "You have combat advantage against an enemy you flank" from p. 4 of the quick-start rules implies that you need to be one of the two people on opposite sides of the opponent. In your example, the dagger-tossing rogue would not have combat advantage.

    Worried about spoilers!

I'm in a similar situation, from the player's side of things. We're going to wait for the core rulebooks before we play KotS (to use our own characters), and the guy who's going to DM for us is in China on work at the moment anyway. I've faithfully avoided all of the KotS threads here - all I...

    "Charging provokes attacks of opportunity."

You provoke opportunity attacks from monsters you move past normally. Charging is only a standard action, which means you can travel up to double your movement in a turn and attack with a +1. The only drawback is that you can't take any actions after the charge - but if your plan is to just...

So, what monsters should be Elite and Solos?

I could see a T-Rex or a grizzly bear being solo encounters. However, given the focus on trying to make the D&D world a more fantastic place (as per the Worlds and Monsters preview) I'm not sure how many normal animals will be left in the monster manual. Okay, so dinosaurs aren't "normal", but...

    4e Battle Music! My Dilemma.

Sadly, when you know what Rhapsody are saying it becomes too funny to use. ;)

    4e Battle Music! My Dilemma.

I have the opposite opinion about Rammstein, actually. I find that the later stuff generally works much better, because the obvious bleeps and bloops of Herzeleid and Sehnsucht were too typically "industrial" sounding and distracted from the feel of a medieval-fantasy game. I don't mean to...

    4e Battle Music! My Dilemma.

I didn't mean to overgeneralize all CRPGs - it was intentional hyperbole. Regardless, most of that stuff has a very specific MIDI sound, and when you take that stuff out of its "video game" context it often sounds a bit tacky. That's the way I feel, anyway. Some of the ocremix stuff is pretty...

    4e Battle Music! My Dilemma.

Personally I'm against using the battle theme music from RPG videogames. The battles in most such games are really short, and D&D battles can take quite a while to sort out - sure, the tracks are designed to be looped, but a half hour of the Final Fantasy battle music is going to get on...

    "Charging provokes attacks of opportunity."

Thanks everyone. I'm glad I'm not just missing something and that it is a case of vague wording. I'm pretty sure that we're right about it being the movement component of the charge that provokes opportunity attacks, but I was curious enough to ask about it at least.

    "Charging provokes attacks of opportunity."

This little sentence from the KotSF quick-start rules has had me wondering for a while about exactly what is meant. The way I see it, there are two reasonable interpretations here, but I'd like a reference to a definite answer if at all possible. Either "charging provokes attacks of...
