D&D 4E WotC this is something you absolutely cannot screw up in 5E like you screwed up in 4E

Indeed, where it was appropriate. A specific campaign setting with context.

What kind of New Setting for Fifth Edition? (Other than old settings)

3E Oriental Adventures by WotC did this. They included Rokugan as a default setting, but Rokugan only used about half the rules presented in the rules chapters of the book.

    Hobbits are Back!

That's a good point. Also, (because I'm a freak for "realism" (I know, shoot me (I know, too many brackets (sue me)))) it is true that if you exactly mirror the diversity of human shapes, then the race seems like humans*. If one were to want to do it right, one would pick a few characteristics...

Getting Inside A WotC Marketer's Head

You might be right about that being their thinking. However, if WotC is thinking like that, they're doing it wrong. I mean, the segment of players who are playing a game that they don't really like, but tolerating it because it's the only thing out there. That segment has to be extremely small...

    Hobbits are Back!

I see a couple people here advocating a fat race and a skinny race of halflings, and I can't say I agree with that. Why not just one "race" of halflings, in which individuals can be either portly and sedentary, or lithe and active? If there are going to be different subraces of halflings, I...

    Hobbits are Back!

You know what I'd also like to see is some really scummy elves. Elves with food stains on their shirt. Long, floppy pointed ears, battered elf-hat, peach-fuzz beard, and a spine that isn't fully erect. Edit: what the crap is PEACH?

    Hobbits are Back!

I didn't notice this before, but Jeremy calls the new approach to artwork "modular". It was probably a slip of the tongue, because how on Earth can artwork be modular? But what it does go to show is how much these guys are drilling on their talking points. "What is 5e?" Modular modular modular...

    Hobbits are Back!

Woo! Hobbits are back in the game! Okay, not with the name hobbit, but anyways. Although, as much as I like my tubby hobbits, it seems kind of stereotypical for the hobbit to be the fat one. Why not a fat human? Or would a chubby human be confused with a dwarf? Surely WotC's artists aren't...

    Attacks of Opportunity

I voted yes for AoOs because I know how to use them, and I know how to use them quickly. There is a small-but-significant realism argument for keeping the AoO rules in, and that's enough for me. But I realize that not everyone out there has my intellect or is willing to read the rules, so I...

What kind of New Setting for Fifth Edition? (Other than old settings)

I think it would depend on the presentation. It could be done well, or it could be done poorly. You're right about your concern about muddiness. It would also depend on what the RPGA is doing. There's always been a bit of a tension over what the "real" world of D&D is. I tend to lean to the...

What kind of New Setting for Fifth Edition? (Other than old settings)

Well my Planescape suggestion in another thread didn't go over too well, but here's my new suggestion: the default setting is a many-alternate-worlds multiverse, with multiple Material Planes that share the basic assumptions of the D&D fantasy milieu, and are relatively easy to hop between...

    I don't DM 4th edition, but when I do

I look at it this way: if a player gets emotional about an imaginary magical sword, then somewhere along the line the DM has done right. Be more afraid when the players don't care about losing their imaginary stuff.

    I don't DM 4th edition, but when I do

It's just that, for me, maybe it's because I'm not the best role-player, but I've been a player in a game, and bad things happened to me, and I reacted as if I cared about the character. I whined a bit, and pouted. And then I was surprised by the DM who said "okay okay, that didn't happen." That...

    I don't DM 4th edition, but when I do

I think making the barbarian sad is pretty cool. Can you imagine playing the role of that dwarf who loses his ancestral sword. RP-wise, that dwarf should be throwing a fit. He should be whining and crying and pouting, and generally being a nuisance to his party, and cursing the gods for allowing...

    I don't DM 4th edition, but when I do

Or you could be explicitly vindictive and jerky, like taking off a band-aid. Scenario: Player: Oh wow, this new plus a jillion magic sword of slaying everything is great! Watch out townsfolk, Blarg the Crude is coming back to town! DM: Um, that sword is kind of overpowered. A rust monster...

    I don't DM 4th edition, but when I do

Oh yes, I feel so sorry for the fighter who lost his glowing, magical axe of awesome, forced to use a slightly less glowy, slightly less awesome magical axe. Boo hoo. [/world's smallest violin]

    I don't DM 4th edition, but when I do

Well, I'd say the proper way to run a rust monster encounter is with a little bit of warning ahead of time, and a chance for the players to outsmart it. Maybe treat it as a skill challenge instead of a combat encounter. It's pretty much become accepted nowadays in a dungeon encounter, when...

_All_ Planes should be The Far Realms

I have a problem with the existence of the Far Realms. I think the existence of this otherworldly planes kind of makes the regular planes seem sort of mundane. It's like Wizards was saying "What if we take the planes, which are super freaking awesome, and then we turn the dial up to Eleven!"...

Your D&D edition is not a football team

Yes, blame us for being human and liking the things we like. Blame us for being passionate. Blame us for being satisfied with our local gaming groups. Blame us for lurking on insular sub-forums. Blame us for being interested in some conversations about gaming, but not others. Blame us for...

    I don't DM 4th edition, but when I do

I like the flavour there. I think officially in 4E it's a lot easier than that. Basically a wizard can automatically deconstruct magical items to get at the tasty residuum centre. However, I really like the idea of a wizard's laboratory having a bunch of cages with baby rust monsters in.
