Sword Coast Adventurer’s Guide: The First Official D&D 5E Setting

I would have expected "Premier" stores to be selling it on October 20th -- 14 days prior to the official release on November 3rd. Why do you think they "jumped the gun?"

Now You Can Play With Vin Diesel's WITCH HUNTER Class!

I will be joining a Ravenloft game soon and the DM approved this class so I plan on creating a dwarvish Ghostslayer. Ghostslayer is the most mechanically simple of the 3 available archetypes but it still could be fun and, starting at 5th level (with 2 attacks adding Blood Rite damage + STR + WIS...

D&D 5E Take enemy weapon with Mage Hand

Why "take" the bow when you can disable it by cutting the bow strings? Mage Hand + Scissors/Shears = Snip! (Using a single blade, like a dagger, would take too long)

    D&D 5E Skeleton behavior

Personally, I like piles of bones that rise-up to form a (nearly) complete skeleton before attacking and, when they are destroyed, fall back into a pile of bones. The same with an apparent corpse -- or parts of a corpse -- that stumble and lurch after whatever disturbed them. This makes the...

Rule for daily item use changing

The per-milestone limitation was probably there for episodic play, like LFR or a Delve, where each adventure assumed the party always started "fresh" and followed a fairly common format of (2 or) 3 combat encounters plus a Skill Challenge so you, generally, knew when to "blow your dailies." It...

D&D Encounters Season 3 - Keep on the Borderlands

True, having the "Red Box" rules is not required to running an Essentials game but, considering some players are going to want help in creating new Essentials characters, a DM would look pretty silly claiming "I don't know how." Pre-generated characters are available, however, so the DM could...

D&D Encounters Season 3 - Keep on the Borderlands

D&D Encounters is ideal for people that want to learn how to play, do not know anyone locally who plays and/or cannot make a commitment to a "regular" game. Pre-generated characters are available so they do not need anything to join an Encounters game; though a single d20 would be helpful...

D&D Encounters Season 3 - Keep on the Borderlands

The current (Meetup) sponsorship expires in September -- before season#3 starts -- so if WotC renews the sponsorship it will definitely help. Sending out another "welcome" package, containing books and tiles to give away to DMs and players, would be a nice touch too. ;)

D&D Encounters Season 3 - Keep on the Borderlands

20 weeks is a major commitment. Our Meetup group runs 6 tables every week, at 3 different locations, and several of our DMs are getting burned-out so I have to find replacements. The problem is that few new DMs want to commit for such a long period (5 months!) and they are, essentially, required...

    The "Bubble"

"Lunge", that's a great name for it, thanks! My players love the option too. So much, actually, that they are disappointed when it cannot be used in a LFR game. :hmm:

    The "Bubble"

I have two house rules that relate to this situation and eliminate it as an "issue." 1) If you use a Move action to Standup you get a free Shift -- just like what happens if there is a creature in your square. Note that using Acrobat Boots, to Standup as a Minor action, does not grant the free...

    Ship battle-mats/tiles

If you DM RPGA games the next mailing (expected this month?) will be a double-sided poster map involving several ships. This may not help you directly, if you are not a RPGA DM, but some people may not want theirs. . .

DM's perspective: How to deal with the flaming sphere

I rule it similiarly, as a medium-sized object, except that it doesn't fill the square for purposes of "hard corners." As an object, I allow powers to push, pull and slide it -- if they can affect objects -- but the sphere itself cannot be damaged. I also rule that the caster must always have...

XP: Shouldn't the whole be more than the sum of its parts?

You could always use an XP multiplier based on the difficulty of the encounter. For example, something like: x0.5 for an Easy encounter x1.0 for a Standard encounter x1.5 for a Hard encounter Maybe even make it an analog formula like: XP awarded = (Encounter XP / Standard XP for an...

    Sneak attack and hunter's quarry

Perhaps there is more errata than what I posted below but I do not see anything that limits the number of rounds the quarry is effective. Hunter’s Quarry [Revision/Addition] Player’s Handbook, page 104 In the first paragraph, replace “enemy nearest to you” with “nearest enemy to you that you...

    Sneak attack and hunter's quarry

I was under the impression that Hunter's Quarry does not end until 1) The quarry was dead or 2) The encounter ends; whichever comes first. There is another option, 3) When another target is marked, but that does not apply to a multi-classed Ranger because they can only mark once an encounter.

Forked Thread: Is Being Knocked out Restful?

I agree with the OP, being knocked-out or dying is not considered resting. My reasoning is that your Death Save counter requires a rest to reset which implies that being knocked out while in a dying state is not resting -- otherwise it would instantly reset. I feel being non-lethaly knocked-out...

Rule of Thump for Short Rests

I believe he really did mean "Thump" as in, "your rest is over, THUMP!"

Did the WotC boards blow up...again?

I noticed a clue in their "sorry, our database is hosed" error message: MySQL Error : Table './mainboards/postparsed' is marked as crashed and should be repaired

How will the designers (or the players) deal with magic item influx due to PC death?

This sounds similar to how it was done in Earthdawn. Most magic items are effectively mundane until you perform a ritual to bind yourself (or "weave threads" in ED parlance) to it. The more you know (and I mean really know as in its True Name and history) about the item the more powerful...
