Forked Thread: Is Being Knocked out Restful?

Hi, first post and I'm a bit of a newb to AD&D.
But my 2c anyway

I'd say if the other PC's are resting. Then the KO'd PC benefits from resting aswell (both long and short rests).
This due to them laying his limp body on a bedroll and tending his wounds or in other ways being generally helpful.

If the battle still rages however (not sure how 5+ minute encounters work really) I'd rule "no rest for the KO'd"

I agree with the OP, being knocked-out or dying is not considered resting. My reasoning is that your Death Save counter requires a rest to reset which implies that being knocked out while in a dying state is not resting -- otherwise it would instantly reset. I feel being non-lethaly knocked-out would be the same for this purpose.

Hmm, like I said I'm a bit new to the rules.
I'm not even sure that a PC can be "dying" and concious at the same time at all ?

Regardless, if the PC is down and out with body fluids pooling on the floor and vital organs hanging out, and the other PC's are merrily taking 5 and forty winks...Somethings is a bit off.
Hopefully they would be all over that PC with prayers, bandages and potion IV's before they decide to take any rests :p

Special circumstances may apply of course, If the PC's are in a hurry and running around with the KO'd guy slung over the fighters shoulder or something.

Or in another attempt to clarify what I meant: If no-one else in the party is resting, then the unconcious PC isn't resting either.

By itself being KO'd should not = rest.
But under good conditions I would allow it since it would just slow down the game for no good reason not to.
Since the players would likely want to rest until all PC's are fully recovered anyway.

Nope. You have to choose to take a Short Rest, you can't forcibly take one by virtue of unconsciousness.
I'd disagree to some extent.
an uncontious PC can't really "refuse" medical care right ?

I suppose the player could state that his character dies despite healing attempts and leave the table for some reason..But that's not really related.

I would also rule quite easily that a PC that is out cold due to magic or drugs, rather than physical trauma, is infact taking a forced rest.
But since I'm AFB this might have house rules written all over it.

I'd vote that being knocked out is bad, and rest is good, therefore, K/O'd status keeps you from resting. Any other opinions?
Yep. The answer to this question is: What would be best for the story? It's the DMs decision.

I'd say this is a decision similar to the one after taking down a foe to 0 hp. Is the foe dead or just unconscious?

please let me come over and let anybody knock out who claims that this will give him some rest!

seriously, use some common sense, so hell no! being knocked out isn't really resting.

on the other hand, it's a fantasy game!
maybe allow it for PCs with con > 16, dwarves, ...
but realistically: no.

I'm not sure if there is any actual rule for this, but here is what I'd end up doing:

Has the PC been knocked out, dragged, and bound on a sacrifice alter by the enemy? Then no, being knocked out is not restful.

Has the PC been stabilized, bandaged, and in the care of allies? Then yes, being knocked out is restful.
