[OT] In search of a good time waster.

It's not a game, but The Straight Dope can provide many hours and hours of fascinating reading, well sprinkled with doses of The Encyclopedia Mythica to help waste away the time.

    cross gender fun?

Right now my newest character is a female swordfighter monk, in the style of Yu Shu Lien (Michelle Yeoh) from Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. I personally find that film to be an excellent example of female heroines who can kick ass, without being sex objects. Now if I can only get to *play* her...

Building a stronghold on shoestring budget

Re: Re: Re: Building a stronghold on shoestring budget Summon Monster spells last in rounds, as in segments of six seconds. That means a twentieth level caster would be summoning Xorns for 120 seconds, or two minutes. Even extend spell would turn that into only four minutes, and persistent...

    Getting lost?

What would be a good way to handle PC parties getting lost in the wilderness? I was looking through my old D&D, AD&D, and HackMaster stuff, and it seems all of them have mechanics for them getting lost, except for 3rd edition. The real shame of this is, 3rd edition has the wilderness lore skill...

    Biblical Monsters?

Found these nasty critters in the book of Revelations, the horde of locusts unleashed from the bottomless pit under the command of Abaddon upon the sounding of the fifth trump. So they're giant locust, with barding and breastplates, human heads with the hair of women, the teeth of lions, and...

    Trip Attack

Alright, I know it's been asked a hundred times before, but I can't seem to find it right now. Do you have to use a weapon that mentions being able to deal out trip attacks to make a trip attack?

Star Wars action figures as minis?

How well does using the action figures as miniatures work out? Do they come with bases so they'll stand, or do we just have to not shake the table? Will they fit in 1" squares on a standard battlemap, or would we have to do something else?

    [Semi-OT] Morrowind

It's a very nice game, but it's also quite different from Neverwinter Nights. Neverwinter Nights will be D&D based, you can get a party, has multiplayer, and most likely has a fairly linear plot. Morrowind is first-person, with no party support (that I have encountered), no multiplayer, very...

    Encyclopedia Mythica is back up

I checked today just for the hell of it, and the Encylopedia Mythica at http://www.pantheon.org is back up finally! This is the greatest online mythology resource, and I got scared when it went down for so long. If you've not seen it, definitely check it out.

Help me get a feel for the Scarred Lands setting?

I noticed a Scarred Lands book at Barnes & Noble the other night. That was unexpected, but it would probably help get something of a feel of the setting.

    How neat is this?

After our game tonight, our DM graciously surprised us all by handing out actual replicas of the letters our characters received after our latest quest. They were written on replica parchment complete with wax stamps. (Which we all thought were cool seals until she mentioned it was just the butt...

Counter Collection 2, yucky elementals and packaging comment.

I picked up the Counter Collection 2 yesterday, I am going to officially have to get little zip-loc craft bags to seperate all these into now that I have both sets, so I can have "Bag of orcs" "Bag of Kuo-Toa" and so forth, but anyways.. I'll be frank, those computer rendered images for the...

    Fly vs Polymorph Self

The Monster Manual is hazy on this. Flight is listed specifically as being an Extraordinary ability, but then in the description says it's due to natural bouyancy. I suppose it could go whichever way the DM wanted to say, leaning towards getting the flight. Damn. No beholders dropping like rocks...

    Fly vs Polymorph Self

The spell description mentions that you gain any natural abilities the form would have, and specifically mentions flight due to having wings. Previous to the errata, there was a disorientation factor (to attacks?), but it was removed in the new version, presumably to make up for the restrictions...

    Fly vs Polymorph Self

Re: Re: Fly vs Polymorph Self Well damn. I'd not be trying to stretch the spell so far, if my PC had the cash to copy any of the new spells he finds on scrolls to his spellbook. I suppose this leaves Pixie and Harpy as my choices for taking flight, with Pixie being much preferred for the size...

    Fly vs Polymorph Self

Is there any particular reason to use Fly over polymorphing yourself into a humanoid creature that can fly and use somatic/material components? (Succubus/Incubus) The only downside I can notice is that your stats become the averages for a creature of that sort, which could hurt mages with high...
