How did you learn to GM?

I posted a question this morning on Treasure Tables, my weblog for GMs: how did you learn to GM? My rambling answer is there, in the post ("How Did You Learn to GM?") -- and I'd love to hear how EN Worlders answer this question, here on EN World, over on TT (no account needed to post a...

Minis and Grids, do you use them?

For D&D, always. (I use counters rather than minis, though.) I don't feel that having a grid necessarily runs counter to creativity, and I've seen too many combats turn into unplayable messes without one.

    new/upcoming DVDs?

I use this site: http://www.currentfilm.com/dvddates.html It's simple, to the point, and has Amazon links in case I can actually wait to buy something on Amazon. ;)

    Five Nations thread (merged)

I picked it up at my FLGS yesterday, after pining for it all week. ;) IMO, it's a very well put together book, with great touches like "Five things every Cyran knows." I like the approach of statting some of the major NPCs, and including in-depth adventure hooks -- overall, I'm quite pleased...

    Amazon.com and release dates

I always liked the gold box idea, but I hated what was in mine -- so I stopped checking it. But this new approach rocks! Everything in my gold box today was something I'd consider buying, and they were nearly all gaming books. Thanks for the FYI! :)

Why I refuse to support my FLGS

On average, I don't think gaming stores tend to make a whole lot of money. Some of them probably make good money, others struggle, and some fail entirely. It's a niche market, as has been pointed out, and it's often a fairly fickle niche market to boot. Sure, it's a business -- but the good...

Future comic book film sequel you are most looking forward too?

These four excite me: Spider-Man 3 X-Men 3 Sin City 2 Batman Begins sequel Unless they mess with what made the first ones good, I can't see how the sequels could be bad -- these 4 rocked. :) I've not heard anything about Wolverine, but that could be promising. The rest don't interest me...

    Help me spend my money...

AB is fantastic, and likely to be useful no matter what kind of game you run. On top of the templates, 100 templated monsters are included -- so it's also a MM. The DMGII is very good, but may or may not be your cup of tea depending on what you're after. I'm very happy with it, though. I don't...

    I need help balancing

Would you mind swapping the text color for one that reads well on a dark background? Also, what kind of balance help do you need -- are there things about the class you think are unbalanced, or are you just after a once-over?

    AGMG - pdf or print?

A lot of it is prep-oriented material, which I find is just fine in PDF. If I'm going to reference something a lot at the table, I can't stand not having it in print. There are at least a couple of things -- notably, the slick rules for quickie NPCs -- that you might well want to have in front...

    Essential 3E Realms Products?

Agreed. I'd put MoF and PGtF after that one, followed by whatever sounds useful. I haven't been disappointed with any of the 3.x FR books (unlike the tail end of 2e stuff...), and they've all got handy things in them. :)

Congratulations! :) I'd be nervous too, but it sounds like a very cool step for you to take.

I like HCs as well, when I feel like spending the extra cash. :) Many major trades come out in HC first, like other books. From the stuff I've mentioned, the following are the ones that I know had HC versions -- which may now be hard to find, YMMV: Sin City Sandman Ultimates Batman: Long...

That's the right title. It's all personal preference, but I bought the hardcover and only liked about 3 of the stories in this one. There's a softcover now, which would make it more bearable. ;)

    [July] What are you reading?

I just finished Robert Chalmers' first novel, Who's Who in Hell, which was pretty good. It slumped in the second half, but the ending was the saddest thing I've ever read, and brilliant. Now I've moved on to The Company, by Robert Littell -- a sprawling 900 page novel about the CIA, which is...

If you're taking recommendations on non-self-contained trades now, too -- like Sandman -- this is a must-read. Make sure to read at least the first two before you decide if you like it: Gaiman didn't find his "voice" for the series until the second book (not that the first isn't good, it's just...

    Eberron pronunciation...

It always reads as "sire" to me, but "see-ree" is actually a neater pronunciation. After so long reading it as sire, I wonder if I get wrap my brain around see-ree? ;)

How many would be interested in this kind of d20 supplement ...?

I like the idea, and if a good sample were available, I'd consider buying it. :) As far as possible publishers go, if you like the sound of that route, Philip Reed of Ronin Arts has an open thread looking for submissions. RA handles the assembly, layout, etc., and gives you a cut of the profits...
