oh. pretty simple then indeed :) thanks

D&D 5E Retraining (players, not characters)

Right, so you're not guaranteed to have one every turn and can only use it for the action described by the feature it grants. In case of the Wizard, am I right in thinking that casting a spell with a casting time of 'bonus' automatically grants and uses the Wizard's bonus action?

D&D 5E Retraining (players, not characters)

This. I'm trying to wrap my head around the bonus actions but I struggle. It's kinda like 4E's minor action, but not really? Somebody explain how this works for me please, even though it's probably painfully obvious.

    D&D 5E Player's Handbook Races

I very much liked the Eladrin vs Elf instead of High Elf vs Wood Elf, sad to see it gone. But hey Tieflings so.. !

D&D 5E Encounter building in the Starter Set

pretty sure group skill checks were in 4E as well

    D&D 5E Round Down Quirks

I'd round up in both cases, exactly because of the problems you describe. half party success was in 4E as well, and I always rounded up when counting heads then. works great.

    D&D 5E DnD5 Xp-table oddity

I felt the same about lvl 1 -3, but apparently that's intentional.

D&D 5E Starter Set Adventure Maps available (both DM & Player)

haha I saw these before and swore they were free downloads - the add to cart just being part of his usual platform. 17.50 for total is really stretching it. I'll get to photoshopping myself tyvm

D&D 5E Just wrapped up four consecutive days of D&D 5th.

Great insights, thanks. Trying to get a group together for a short testdrive, and I know at least one will try to abuse the short rest and try to lawyer himself into stacking them.

D&D 5E Just wrapped up four consecutive days of D&D 5th.

I don't understand that. How would the Rogue fire his bow with a light weapon (short sword?) in his offhand? Not having played 5E yet there's some questions, one of which regarding the sneak attack. If a rogue can ranged SA whenever an ally is adjecent to the target why would he ever go to close...

    D&D 5E Starter Set: Excerpt 3 (actual)

I feel having the players roll at least once does have a purpose: player engagement. Sure if there's zero zero zero consequence a skill roll can be omitted (like riding a horse or opening a heavy door). But in case of eg a lock giving the players one and only one roll gives them not only...

    D&D 5E Starter Set: Excerpt 3 (actual)

Ooh that's devious. Might use that once I get a new group together.

    D&D 5E Starter Set: Excerpt 3 (actual)

Indeed, a trapped lock or in lesser extent a trap does carry a penalty: failing the check by 5 or more springs the trap! Ergo, no take 20 for you.

    D&D 5E Starter Set: Excerpt 3 (actual)

I never understood this solution. This basically means each and every player can just keep rolling until they hit 20 (wether or not regarded as critical, per DM). Or, don't roll at all and always take 20. I don't allow retries unless something happnes that dramatically changes the situation. To...

    Your opinion/experiences with some houserules

Fair point. Would you tell the players what DC to hit beforehand though? Right now they don't even try once so they have no idea wether or not it would be better and/or easier than an at-will..

    Your opinion/experiences with some houserules

Ooh I like this one. My players are all new players and the more they've read the rules, the more they become restricted by the numbers. In the few occasions they have tried something cool™ they rolled terribly. Not their fault ofcourse but they did feel gypped spending a standard action. They...

    Your opinion/experiences with some houserules

Inspired by this post; [/I] .. I have been wondering about some other common house rules to speed up play and spice things up a bit. For instance, how do you feel about making Skill Checks a free action during (non-skillchallenge) encounters? This would probably encourage more heroic...

    Encounter Pwr Recharge House Rule?

This sounds very interesting. We've been struggling with some streamlining issues in our group. My players tend to sit on their action points like it's black gold - way too valuable to just give up. On the other hand, the wizard usually pushes for 15 minute workdays because everything lower than...
