What are you reading in 2025?

I love the density and depth of the world. I want someone to build me an RPG setting with such resonance.

When to set a "historical" supers game? (read OP before answering poll)

I didn’t think of that, and like it.

When to set a "historical" supers game? (read OP before answering poll)

It struck me what would push Classical Greek/Roman/etc supers toward the tropes: if they’re all commoners. Which means that the moment they cross someone aristocratic, they’d be up ancient naughty word creek…if their identity were known. And their associates would be open to reprisals as well...

What are you reading in 2025?

I’m certainly going to say something about it. :)

What are you reading in 2025?

I’ve been meaning to do to do this for years, and just finished Gardens of the Moon, the first volume of Steve Erickson’s Malazan Books of the Fallen. Wow. Hooked am I. I need to not try shotgunning them all in a row - I know myself and that I would burn out. But I expect to read one or two each...

Pineapple Express: Someone Is Wrong on the Internet?

Good choices. Also Bear Whizz Beer, Bass-o-matic, and floor wax/dessert topping.

    Darkvision Ruins Dungeon-Crawling

Six of one, half a dozen of the other. There was a really good story in the ‘90s Hellraiser series from Epic Comics, by Scott and Bo Hampton, with a guy stuck in an endless black space with a single gold door in it. He goes through, the door vanishes, and now there’s a gold door twice as far...

    Darkvision Ruins Dungeon-Crawling

Well…play with other well-read gamers who share an interest in horror, dark fantasy, sword & sorcery, etc subjects. So basically like any question of aesthetics. it’s never interested me much. What matters to me is exploration, discovery, and responding to challenges. Agreed a lot.

    Darkvision Ruins Dungeon-Crawling

Oh, sure. I just don’t think it should be as ubiquitous as some people have been saying in recent years. I’d like to see design variety, where every element is sometimes left out. …um, not all at once. I don’t quite know what you’d do with a featureless plain of a dungeon except maybe have...

    Darkvision Ruins Dungeon-Crawling

When I’m not engaged in the sort of technical argument where I distinguish between weird (the unnatural presence of something not normally there) and eerie (the unnatural absence of something normally present) and have citations to Mark Fischer and Michael Cisco, I tend to think these overlap a...

    Darkvision Ruins Dungeon-Crawling

No. Dungeon design doesn’t have to depend on darkness in any way. You can light the whole thing as brightly as your living room and get plenty of suspense and horror out of the layout and interior decorating (to put it flippantly). And since we are ourselves a visually oriented species, that...

Here Are 2025's Most Anticipated TTRPGs... As Voted By You!

This is a thread with the results of asking us what games we’re most excited about that aim to come out in the new year. We are, of course, not excited by games we haven’t heard of. We are excited by ones we have heard about and probably discussed some already, and that we can provide basic info...

Pineapple Express: Someone Is Wrong on the Internet?

The house I gre up in is well into the evacuation order zone for the Eaton Fire. I hope it doesn’t burn. And ditto for everything around it. Big fires are scary.
