So I am thinking of running a game where no PHB races or classes are used. All other WOTC sources for races and classes are allowed (with the exception of subraces/variants of PHB races) Has anyone ever tried anything similar and if so what was your experience?

Our DM allowed us at higher levels to take a special version of leadership which effectively made our horses a cohort, we simply advanced thier hit dice and gave them feats and skill points. This worked pretty well with a game ending at around level 15.

People's opinions about the book aside, I would not try to run the type of campaign you suggest without Complete Psionic. It has psionic healing powers in it among other things that allow psionics to cover some of the pitfalls of not having certain casters in your group.

You can practically do that with Maug's in the current set. Those things make the boosters with them it it noticably heavy. I figured that out after my 3rd maug trying to cherrypick for a Horned Devil *sigh* Now I pick the lightest bootsers, got some of my best rares that way.
