    Free form spellcasting ?

I was wondering if it could be possible to have a skill based spellcasting system with no fixed spells: the mage decides what kind of effect he wants to achieve, pays the mana (or something similar), rolls a skill checks and go. I know that this would be difficult, and probably at the end...

    Angels as template/class

I was considering a campaign where the main non-evil outsiders would be angels. Their allineament would vary bewteen good and neutral, and they would be dedicated to something. For example there will be angels of light, angels of fire, but also angels of death, darkness & so on. I've not...

Has anyone House Ruled the Half-Elf???

I gave them the human skill points. (+1 lvl. x4 at level 1). Actually IMHO the PHB half-elves are a little underpowered, and some skill points could even this.

    Aristocrat as PC Core Class

I made this custom Aristocrat PrC for a renaissance world: http://digilander.libero.it/gpetruc/crystaldawn/classes.html In a more medieval one you could stick to the fighter bab, give feats at lvl 5, 10, 15, 20; or keep the cleric bab, raise the hp to d10, give bonus leadership at lvl 7 and 14...

    Simulationist Point Buy [Long]

Nice. Usually I played with 30 point buy with the DMG rules, but I will try this rules next time.

    Herbalism rules...

There was an herbalism thread in this messageboards some weeks ago (I started it, if I remember well), but I was trying to make a general system and not to list specific herbs (less bookkeeping). There is also the Guide to Herbs for RPG by Shaun Hauntley (not sure about the spelling of the name...

    [Dusk] The spell point system

Well, ... I'm giving less that 75% of the spells that they would have in a normal slot system if they didn't have any bonus spells (while usually they'll have lots of them). I'm not sure about this. Anyway the idea could be to determine what would be a likely attribute score at the various...

    [Dusk] The spell point system

Ok. Some This should be my the third (and hopefully last) try. I first determined the cost for each spell high enough to make level shifting upwards costly. I gave the sorceror a number of spellpoints enough to cast 4 spells of the four higher levels a caster can cast. (In this way, casting four...

    [Dusk] The spell point system

Summary I'm writing down a short summary on what appeared in this discussion, before posting additional opinions. There are some problems in designing a simple spellpoint system for D&D spells, and expecially: (1) Level Shifting upwards: using most of the spell points to cast spells of the...

ECL Equivalents of higher attribute selection

IMHO no. A half celestial (ECL +3) gets lots of bonuses to stats and cool abilities. Maybe a +2 to two ability scores is, but simply +3 point buy is not. (a maximum of a +3 Str is worse than a level of fighter. not to mention spellcaster levels)

[Dusk, Blue Magic] TIME!!! It's on your side...Yes it is!!

Nice spells. Just two things Maybe Time Twister should be something different, IMHO (in MtG this was actually a spell to mess up the situation and regain lost power, not a defensive spell) Time Walk is nice, but actually I think that the 3E Time Stop spell is actually very close to the Time...

    [Dusk] The spell point system

A few math I've thought a bit about the "level shifting problem" (the fact that with spell points a caster might use them to cast only higher level spells, but many of them) Starting from Eldorian's idea of a 5 round combat, and that he casts 4 spells (he's also got magic items such as...

    Spontaneous Druids

Mee two. I'll use it in my campaign. (Beware to all those who try to attack a druid in it's grove!!)

    [Dusk] The spell point system

I'd keep the fact that spell preparations are not lost. This would give more versatility (you could balance it out by giving less power) To avoid the problem that a fireball costs about the same as a meteor swarm cast at the same level, you could use something like the psion scale to determine...

    Spellfire...my version...

Nice, very nice. but I think that these are too many feats (considering that most classes get relatively few feats). Maybe it could be kept more simple. The idea of a PrC (or even a basic class, if you make spellfire more common) is good, also.

    [Dusk, Blue Magic] The Counterspells

Good idea I suggest to try to keep it quick (in player time) also to avoid non spellcasters getting bored when a spell duel is up. Also, please make rules for more than two spellcasters. It would be really cool !

    [Dusk] The spell point system

I don't understand the table with the cost of the spells: If I want to cast, let's say, a Fireball at Caster Level 8, I have to pay: a) 8 spell points (3rd level) b) 11 spell points (caster level 7) c) 14 spell points (caster level 9) d) 8 (3rd level spell) + 8 (caster level) e) something...

[Dusk, Blue Magic] Sleight of Mind

What can you do: 1- simply cover the creature allineament with an illusion 2- change the summoned creature (but it still obejs to the caster) 3- take control of the summon spell, choosing the creature and having it act by it's own will (or your own will) And for Symbol, can you change the type...

    Spellfire...my version...

Interesting. Considering what is written under the Spellfire paragraph on the FRCS (where it says something like "talented users are able to release multiple blasts at once, or even fly") one could also have different power levels, such as: One must take the Spellfire Wielder feat at 1st level...
