I love the use of random encounters in old school D&D to shape the setting and act as a resource/time drain. I've used them with 5e where they added an element of danger in early levels. It quickly turned into just more time in combat and bonus XP for the party.

I ran a Swords & Wizardry campaign not too long ago where I allowed the original alchemist, berserker, illusionist and healer from early Strategic Review/Dragon. The berserker was fun (although it really complicated things in S&W). Healer was actually pretty powerful

People are stuck in their ways. Any deviation from the normal polyhedral set is met with disdain. See reactions to DCC's "funky dice" (i.e. non-standard polyhedrals).

True. I tend to ignore Zeb's. It was after my time when I was into SF as a kid and never got into it more recently when I revisited the game.

Star Frontiers used a d100 system. Abilities and skills were on a scale of 1 to 100. It didn't have classes but did have Primary Skill Areas: Military, Technological, Biosocial.

The party just became a party of 5, so that may change things. I still feel like I need to up my game.
