    D20 modern worth it?

Yes... good points in both cases Synicism. I'd buy a RPG thats all be photocopied from a master document if the rules and settings were quality. I don't need to ooh and aah over the books... I'm not collecting them to set on a shelf, I got them to use because of the content. d20 Modern, to...

    D20 modern worth it?

Yes, that takes care of the cover aspect. Thats why you can sunder a weapon? Which is attempting to hit a specific part of a combatant. To me there is little difference in attempting to whack a weapon or attempting to whack someone in the head. Even action movies don't just shoot everyone...

    D20 modern worth it?

Well, yeah, more radical rules in comparison to d20, but stuff thats been done for many years too. :) Picked up M&M just because of that [its OGL too] and have Traveller [I remember the old Traveller box and have fond memories] too because I want the game for keepsake, but also to explore their...

More Chicago Gaming: D&D in FR

Re: In the area Cool.. just dropped you an email. And yes, I concur about the two stores. Although if I need something from WotC its just as easy to get it from the WotC store in Woodfield... except during December! :)

    D20 modern worth it?

Once again, creating house rules to "fix" the game system. I like the idea of "Prestige" somethings. Classes would work ok, even with one basic class. However, I think having advanced Talent Trees that could be picked up would be a good way to go and that way you essentially need only one...

Joining prestige classes - new rules

I like the #2 situation, except of course like the Arcane Mage that... would have to be a member of the organization to use the spellpool. But otherwise except for those occassional PrC that needs case by case basis rulings, I think it works. Not so sure about #3. I don't think anyone in our...

    D20 modern worth it?

Aye, but its tolerable in D&D because its been that way for eons. ;) Anything else, its not acceptable even in a class system. No you are right, it doesn't. However, its obviously been designed that way. If it wasn't, it even makes less sense for both the naming the conventions. After all...

What house rules do you use?

Sure... I'll probably post it at ENWorld, but I must say that its at a very rough stage right now... outlines and thoughts and notes, nothing really to be presented at this point. It was probably the work I did with the Journeyman class that pushed me over the edge, so a lot of the ideas, etc...

    D20 modern worth it?

I say do go read the SRD. I'm glad I did and since I did, and laughed a lot, I voted with my money and didn't give WotC anything. I'm sorry, but their generic class concept is total bunk and makes absolutely zero sense. I mean come on, what makes a Strong hero better at combat? His Strength...

    D20 modern worth it?

Yeah, read the SRD first.. if you like the rules presented in it, then buy d20 Modern. Personally, I had a good laugh when I read the d20 Modern SRD... so no, I won't be buying d20 Modern or any other d20 game system [outside of Spycraft which I bought and like] that isn't D&D, and only D&D...

What house rules do you use?

House rules? Not anymore, tired of coming up with house rules to fix d20 much like everyone else is doing. Would rather come up with house rules to add flavor to a system, than fixes. Therefore I am re-writing d20, which is in a way a house rule itself.

    Alternate cross-class skill system

Eep. I completely mis-read what he said and flip-flopped it. Our house rule simply states that ALL skills, class and cross-class, have the same max. skill rank, i.e. lvl + 3. Progression, etc. remains indentical to the standard rules. This has worked fine and has yet to cause any problems...

    Alternate cross-class skill system

We do the same thing, but for all cross-class skills.. and guess what? It hasn't effected the balance of anything. Why? Simply because for most things the 2 points for one rank is too high on a limited skill point budget. The rogue probably benefits the most, allows him to get ranks in...

Does anyone use Dex for attack modifier rather than Strength?

Re: Re Yes, I have found that the simplest solutions to "fixing" D&D are best. Otherwise, too much time and effort is invested in doing "bug fixes" rather than just redesigning the system from the ground-up. Personally, I do like the Weapon Finesse idea myself...

Journeyman PC Class (formerly Expert PC Class)

I don't know that its that underpowered. Is it, hopefully, dilberately a bit underpowered? Yes. But I could deal with somewhere between a fighter and a rogue. And it is possible to get the same number of special abilities [bonus feats for a fighter] as a fighter, but you would need to drop...

Death and Dying (HP and Con scores)

I've proposed to use a -10 + CON modifier as the negative hitpoints, but we are also experimenting with a streamlined critical system too.. and that gives me some other ideas.

Does anyone use Dex for attack modifier rather than Strength?

You could always expand the Finesse feat a bit, allowing more weapons to be taken with it, but probably never two-handed weapons. Probably a good idea to change the PreReqs a bit too when taking Finesse with weapons that are larger than the standard Finesse rules allow.

Journeyman PC Class (formerly Expert PC Class)

Jens, The special abilities were purposely not accounted for. If you took into consideration the class abilities, then the average number of Class Points used to create each core class would be much higher. By not including the special abilities of the core classes, it ensures that the...
