What house rules do you use?

#11- A rule I saw online, Arcane failure chance reduced by a Bards perform skill
That would be mine. It's only for Bard spells.

four others:
1)When a character gains a level and rolls her HD, the result might be modified.

D4 No modifications.
D6 All 1s are considered 2s.
D8 All 1s and 2s are considered 3s.
D10 All 1s, 2s and 3s are considered 4s.
D12 All 1s, 2s, 3s and 4s are considered 5s.

I like this rule because it is very near the average, yet reduces randomization without getting rid of it altogether.

2) Loss of Levels:

The method in the core rules is too ambiguous, sometimes costing you half a level, other times costing you a level and a half. The house rule: If someone is drained a level, he or she loses the entire amount of XP that was the previous level. Example: Alhandra, a 3rd level character is drained one level. The entire amount of XP of 2nd level was 2000 (=3000-1000) XP. Therefore, Alhandra loses 2000 XP.

3) Druids are not restricted to the weapons they receive proficiency in at 1st level. If they have proficiency in a weapon due to multiclassing or race, they may use those weapons freely. The restrictions placed on armour remain in place.

4) Skill Focus +3.

Exactly, I did calculate this one before, but I'm wondering what the averages would be for the more often used "reroll once" or "take the Dm roll if you don't like yours" (which are basically the same) would be. The statistics are a bit more complicated there.

What I dislike about the reroll 1s rule is that the lower the HD, the more benficial it is, which is probably exactly the opposite of what you wanted to achieve when installing the Houserule in the first place.

That's why its easier to just roll and take what you roll, or just use averages period with CON modifiers.
Which I find too random and too boring respectively. Throwing your HD is just something that is exciting about levelling up to my players, something which I don't want to take away.

(edit: yes, i have tried both before I came up with the above system)

House rules?

Not anymore, tired of coming up with house rules to fix d20 much like everyone else is doing. Would rather come up with house rules to add flavor to a system, than fixes.

Therefore I am re-writing d20, which is in a way a house rule itself.

Assuming the player is rational, he/she will reroll only those hit points that are below the average (giving the highest total). The hit point averages are:
d4: 3
d6: 4.25
d8: 5.5
d10: 6.75
d12: 8

Would it be possible to see what you have come up with as a re-write of the system?

Sure... I'll probably post it at ENWorld, but I must say that its at a very rough stage right now... outlines and thoughts and notes, nothing really to be presented at this point. It was probably the work I did with the Journeyman class that pushed me over the edge, so a lot of the ideas, etc. revolve around that "class".

So even this system favours the lower HD classes more than the higher... intriguing.
