Player Engagement Outside of Session Time

Yup you are not alone. When I am a player I’m the opposite. I want to know why my character is involved in the hijinks and some background as to what they know about the set up. I also hate missing the set up in the first 5 minutes of a movie. I suspect I am a bit annoying to some GM’s wanting...

Kenneth Hite shot and wounded, but he's OK.

..and Fall of Delta Green iirc. A game about modern gun toting agents taking on the mythos.

General Player Principles for Better Play

I find spotlight grabbers tend also to more aggressive or assertive, and if they aren’t self aware enough and don’t get their way can be quite strident and unpleasant. This may often mean others in the group prefer to just let them have at it and try and just enjoy whatever spotlight is left...

Worlds of Design: The Price of Advancement

Do/Did they train in skills (apart from working on a specific plan or team coordination, or maybe learning how a new tool works) when they are actually also doing the job? I see that professional sports people who tend to have part of the year not playing games spend that time either in...

D&D General Preferred Length of Side Quests?

It does depend on the group, if you have a group that hates to think they may have missed a hidden loot point or exp point they may think they are “meant” to explore the whole dungeon. But Imo More cool than frustrating. You are adding depth to the world. Presumably the main reason they won’t...

Will the end of Game of Thrones keep you away from House of Dragons?

I probably won’t be watching it immediately. I’m likely to watch it eventually but I won’t be keenly waiting for each episode to drop as I was during seasons 4&5 of GoT.

Stranger Things 4 - Any good?

It’s good. They have so many characters now that they literally have 4 storylines going at the same time and some are much weaker than others. Some characters get to be clever or cool others get very weak arcs. But I enjoyed it overall.

D&D General Stranger Things Image of a D&D Game

Just watched first few episodes of stranger things 4…. I’m surprised WOTC aren’t remaking the Vecna modules

D&D General Any suggestions for an approximately tier 3 level setting?

Can anyone suggest any published material I can use for a tier 3 setting, either wholly or to pick stuff from? I have a long running campaign and the characters are strong 9th level characters and there are 8 of them. They are likely to end up on a different world for a while. An alternate...

D&D 5E (2014) Heat Metal Rules Interp / Minor Nerf

Is a person wearing a suit of metal armour in “physical contact” with it? I am not a person with knowledge of how armour is worn but I would have thought most metal armours have a layer of non metal (cloth or leather) between them and the wearer thus Preventing physical contact (indeed in very...

D&D General How Was Your Last Session?

I GMed but feedback suggests it went well. It was a beach house Friday - Sunday session with 8 players & GM. Homebrew slow 5e D&D campaign (1/10th xp running since 2015). A good session that resulted in a couple of big in campaign reveals so I was happy and the players seem to be as well. Fair X...

Anyone familiar with CoC 6th Edition

This is a fair point. Character advancement in CoC before 7e was very slow. My home rules include 1. grouping up most skills into categories such that once any skill passes 50 and again at 90 then each linked skill with at least 5% gets a +5% bonus; (ie climb, jump, ride &swim is one category...

Anyone familiar with CoC 6th Edition

Great that you’ve found what you needed. Ive run 3 CoC 7e scenarios on roll20 and hadn’t noticed an issue with the character sheet when set to roll either regular, hard ( 1/2 skill) or extreme ( 1/5 skill). Or on the verbose setting which has them all

Anyone familiar with CoC 6th Edition

Sorry I can’t really help. I’ve run a little bit of CoC but not enough to really differentiate between editions 1-6; 7 appears pretty different to earlier editions in its tone. The reason I have posted is to ask what you mean by 7e having the weird 1/5th rule and what trouble roll20 has with it?

Are Video Games Ruining Your Role-playing?

Nope. They said to have to constantly wonder if the players are having a good time, to the point of needing to consult the players about surprises and story arcs.

    Not what they said either.

Are Video Games Ruining Your Role-playing?

It was an attempt to give an in game example of what the OP referred to as “the plot will happen regardless”. Before it got characterised as “springing a shocking surprise“ and “demonising a player“ and other straw man stuff.

Are Video Games Ruining Your Role-playing?

No you appear to have missed the point. For starters it was one player in a group of 4. It wasn’t a bait and switch, it was an in genre encounter along the way to a planned adventure. It took less than 2 sessions to resolve. The player did not opt out by leaving the game, he did however refuse...
