    Vow of Non-Violence

The PC in question has chosen a life of complete nonviolence. That PC should not tolerate any attacks on those who have not attacked first, and should discourage attacking even those who do. Someone who is devout enough in this belief to draw power from it should willingly step in the way of a...

what do you call the son of a duke?

The son of a Duke is a Prince. The son of a King is a Royal Prince. Dukes are very nearly kings, after all. There were plenty of Duke's in the Dark Ages with no feudal overlord. Doge (an italian title) means Duke, and the Doge' of venice (though elected) was a monarch.

    Giving fighters something to do.

Actually, I see his point. There's no way that particular character should have failed those saves. It's not in character, it doesn't fit the fight...I'd have fudged it. But then I cheat like mad to make sure things feel right.

House Rules: Choose Em, Don't Use Em, or Abuse Em?

I run a lot of games. i use different house rules in each one, depending on the feel I'm going for. World background and credibility are far more impiortant to me than rules, or even game balance.

Are Warlocks Eligible to Become Liches?

""It doesn't let you emulate a different alignment in order to bypass a magical trap keyed to alignment"" Why not? According to the 3.5 SRD, "Emulate an Alignment: Some magic items have positive or negative effects based on the user’s alignment. Use Magic Device lets you use these items as if...

Is the concept of "planes of existence" taken from physics? Religion? Elsewhere?

Hades is actually the name of the Greek God of the Underworld. the multitude of demonic names are not just names for Satan...there are entire Christian belief systems regarding the many Devils and Archdevils as well as the Angels and Archangels. Gygax and co. got their backgrounds from these...

    Middle Earth Gods

Forehead smack. I have both, and have read both...sigh. Of course unfinished tales is still part of the same body of work. It was his son that decided which stories to put where. Thanks for the correction.

    Giving fighters something to do.

Unfortunately for drama, many of us have players who go for the kill quick...and of course, in RL, fights are over in seconds if opponents are in melee or don't have cover. With cover, you don't have a fight, you have a stand-off, and those can last days.:) Ranger Wickett, you built the guy...

    Middle Earth Gods

It's in the specific section on the Istari, in the silmarillion. Also, gandalf refers a couple of times to what he is and isn't allowed to do in LOTR. Personally, I think the Valar make marvelous D&D gods. Valar does, after all, mean the Powers of the World.

Economic Problems of Brewing Mead in D&D...

Look at it this way: people in places that make mead have a lot of honey. That's why they make mead. Mead isn't made in wine country. Honey is free, if you own the hives, or collect the hives yourself. the price they list for honey has to be a city price , since city folk can't gather their...

Is the concept of "planes of existence" taken from physics? Religion? Elsewhere?

IIRC, planes of existence (that specific phrase) was used extensively in Michael Moorcock's Eternal Champions series, which was one of the inspirations for D&D.

The Boondock Saints - your opinion?

Ask yourselves a question. Who empowers policemen, judges, lawyers and executioners to do their duty? We do. We empower them to do a job most ofd us don't want to do. Now, obviously, our society frowns on us taking justice into our own hands. This is because the grand majority of people are...

    Giving fighters something to do.

Next bit. 10th level party above (add in a cleric, of course, and they get even more powerful, but that's another rant.) Add level apropriate magic. The BBEG should be 2 to four levels higher then the party. Maybe more. And cleverly built, because your players will milk everything they have...

    Giving fighters something to do.

You've got good points. But when the a very large proportion of the game *is* combat, they should have some juice. Here's an example. 10th level wizard. Spellcasting prodigy, Spell Focus: Evocation, Combat Casting, Greater Spell Focus Evocation. Cast fireball, which he isn't high enough level...
