No secrets can be kept due to Consult Oracle?

Is it just me, or does the Consult Oracle ritual basically make it impossible to keep any secrets once anyone can cast the dang ritual? All it requires is one person, alive or dead, to have known the answer to the question. Like (warning, Eberron spoiler) Is King Kaiuss III a vampire...

Environmental hazards and features in cities?

Does anyone have any ideas for good environmental hazards or features that could be used in city combat encounters (ie in the streets?). In particular the city I'm having to deal with is Stormreach in Eberron, but while there seem to be good examples for wilderness or dungeons there don't...

Shouldn't this go in say, House Rules or something?

    Titan Shell - Flexibility ruling

I just realized that I'd worded it wrong. What the players actually claimed was that he'd only get a save against the push, but he would still be immobilized since the monster would only get one immediate action. I think the issue here is that the players misunderstood the difference between...

    Titan Shell - Flexibility ruling

This came up in Friday's game. The Titan Shell has a power called Flexibility (at will; immediate interrupt, when the titan shell would be immobilized, restrained, pushed, pulled or slid) - The titan Shell makes a saving throw. On a save, the triggering effect is negated and the titan shell can...

    Edition Cycles and declining sales

The Compendium would be a problem, but the Character Builder and Monster Builder would still be there. WotC is going to see something similar happen now with DDI that Commodore had happen with the 64 -> 128 transition. There will be all this material available through the DDI that there will...

4E Situational Modifiers: Too Many or Not Enough?

The problem I have isn't with the situational modifiers for hits...it's the situational modifiers for damage.

Rant about the cover of the 4e Player's Handbook

Obviously we need this person: Tiny Art Director to be doing the art direction for D&D. :-) :-) :-)

    An Indecent Proposal

I've found that the problem isn't the situational modifiers on hit rolls...it's the situational modifiers on damage. Especially when it involves diced damage as opposed to +X when 'such and such' condition applies.

4e Annoyances for those who like 4e

Another one of my peeves that I've mentioned before: Diseases that are trivially easy to cure once you get above about 13-15th level.

4e Annoyances for those who like 4e

Yeah, I agree with this. Earlier editions were too deadly at low levels...and ironically at high levels (ie save or die). However, it's tough to actually kill a PC now...especially if they're a well honed unit with a good Cleric. :-)

4e Annoyances for those who like 4e

For some sure...but others are pretty danged cool. LIke the Assassin power that uses the target's own shadow to attack him. :-)

4e Annoyances for those who like 4e

An interesting thread about what people like about 4e. But something that I think might be more interesting is what people, after playing for a year, find annoying about 4e...yet otherwise they love it. 1. Too many damage modifiers, especially conditional ones. Where previous editions had...

Did an experiment last night with an 'easy' encounter.

I would think they'd really kick ass until they started running out of encounters and dailys. Then the hordes would really start to come into play. Especially with flanking and such. Could be fun as a change of pace though (and I did do a 24 zombie encounter once).

Did an experiment last night with an 'easy' encounter.

This is true and it certainly came into it. 3 of the players are using new characters (for the last 3 sessions). One thing that has become apparent to me (and I started pushing the 'roll your damage at the same time as the attack), is that 4e has one problem in that there is a lot of...

Did an experiment last night with an 'easy' encounter.

I think that's the problem...the hp. There were eight monsters (vs 6 PCs) in that encounter, and even though they were 3 levels lower than the PCs, and were hit pretty much at will (hits on 3s in a couple of cases), the PCs still had to slog through those hp. I rolled so crappily that the...

Did an experiment last night with an 'easy' encounter.

That's a good point. It seems that defenses and to-hit rolls scale quickly over a small range of levels...but hp and damage do not. Probably what makes higher level than the party monsters annoying is that they are hard to hit...not so much that when you hit you have to plug through a ton of...

Did an experiment last night with an 'easy' encounter.

Well, was planning on two experiments last night...one using Sly Flourish's 4e Hard Mode suggestions from his blog (Sly Flourish» Blog Archive » Dungeons and Dragons 4e: Hard Mode). The other was to see how a combat of a lower level would go against the PCs...who are 15th level. They went up...

Darksun titles are now in the WotC product catalog

The thing is...people like me are DMs...yet we might play in someone else's campaign. If I DM and play in an Eberron campaign is it that big of a problem that I know some of the secret knowledge from the ECG? In fact, I get more enjoyment out of playing if I know some of the backstory...even...

Darksun titles are now in the WotC product catalog

Another thing to note, and dissapointing if it wasn't a mistake, is that the Dark Sun Creature Catalog is only a paperback, not a hardcover.
