Unearthed Arcana Why UA Psionics are never going to work in 5e.

Ultimately though, isn't Sci-Fi just another form of fantasy?

Unearthed Arcana Why UA Psionics are never going to work in 5e.

You really should tbh, they're pretty awesome.

    D&D 5E (2014) Here's why we want a Psion class

Maybe burning more resources than is necessary?

    D&D 5E (2014) Here's why we want a Psion class

Heck, maybe in a later class/subclass feature you get a bonus to the save/resistance to the damage to represent you getting used to your own psychic abilities?

    D&D 5E (2014) Here's why we want a Psion class

Maybe some kinda save or you get psychic blowback and take (spell level or equivalent)d(psi dice) in damage?

    D&D 5E (2014) Here's why we want a Psion class

Doesn't Overchannel do something like that? But with damage instead of exhaustion?

    D&D 5E (2014) Here's why we want a Psion class

Of course. But, the same with the Frenzy barbarian, if you put a penalty in the class that revolves around Exhaustion (probably because of the Frenzy barbarian), people are going to ignore it, regardless of any other positive benefit (like mindless rage/retaliation in the frenzy barbarian)

    D&D 5E (2014) Here's why we want a Psion class

looks at Frenzy barbarian. Look, I know I'm crapping on psionics a lot, but I do want it, and I want it to be functional.

    D&D 5E (2014) Here's why we want a Psion class

Alright then. So, outside of other psionics, what would counter them?
  11. FlyingChihuahua

    D&D 5E (2014) Here's why we want a Psion class

So a class specific feature pretty much meant to counter it means that it's fine if an entire way of casting uses the same rules?

And without VSM, how do you detect a spell being cast? It's certainly possible.

    D&D 5E (2014) Here's why we want a Psion class

By the time you've seen the effect of a spell, it has already been cast, and thus, is in capable of being counterspelled.

    D&D 5E (2014) Here's why we want a Psion class

So you would say it's how psionics traditionally operate?
  15. FlyingChihuahua

    D&D 5E (2014) Here's why we want a Psion class

So you admit that you want it for purely gameplay reasons, like say, for example, being unable to counterspell it?

D&D 5E (2014) What class levels have you given monsters in encounters, to give them that extra edge?

Two ideas I've had. 1. Dragon with Sorcerer levels. Kinda simple, but you can still have a lot of fun with it. For example, with a Red Dragon, you can double down and make it a Red Dragon sorcerer, have a bit of with fun and make it a White Dragon sorcerer (party runs in with a bunch of fire...

    D&D 5E (2014) Here's why we want a Psion class

You are correct on this, actually. When you look at the MM Drow's innate spellcasting and the Drow PC's innate spellcasting (well, not specifically with the Drow, but with later races like Aasimar, they call out that you don't need material components, and I have no reason to doubt it's not the...

    D&D 5E (2014) Here's why we want a Psion class

... The Psion is The Mystic. Do you not understand that names can change but the central thing can be the same?

    D&D 5E (2014) Here's why we want a Psion class

That's just the WotC company line, you can't trust that. You'd be right, but the end result is still the same, the Mystic, as it was, has been abandoned, justified or not.
