D&D 5E (2014) What are/will be the main beefs of D&D Next relative to other editions?

As a 4e DM, I don't see myself complaining about 5e so much as choosing something else (maybe 13th age -- still have to see if it stands up to repeated play). I don't feel a lot of rancor toward 5e at this point, but neither does it call to me. If it were to get a truly open license and...

Pathfinder miniatures ... are folks using these much?

I buy a lot of minis in secondary markets. The per-mini price is higher, but when you only want select miniatures, it's cheaper.

Pathfinder miniatures ... are folks using these much?

I've bought some of each (still buy some metal minis too). I like the plastic minis more than the metal minis -- cheaper and less fragile. And if they are pre-painted, so much the better. The pathfinder miniatures are expensive enough that I don't attempt to buy all of them -- just the ones...

Serious question - are you going to invest in D&DNext?

Current answer: I'm not sure. I'm a 4e player, but I worry about how long WoTC will support it with tools... (not so worried about content). I think there is some chance we will switch to 13th age ( or possibly another system, but 13th Age seems the most likely of non-D&D systems ATM). I'm not...

D&D 5E (2014) Where does Next fit in terms of RPG ecology?

"RPG ecology" is not a perfect term. What I'm getting at is where does it seem likely to fit amongst all the competitors? If 4e is the game that you play when you like the combat grid and are hyper about game balance, and 3.5e/Pathfinder the game when you like having lots of options to...

    D&D 5E (2014) L&L The Next Phase

I don't have any particular faith in their ability to get all these new subsystems right. We'll see. They could be anywhere from seriously flawed to fantastic.

    D&D 5E (2014) Extra Life Marathon: 25 Hours of Dungeons & Dragons!

Very cool. Inspired me to install the unofficial Twitch TV Roku channel.

    D&D 5E (2014) Survivability of Low-Level D&D Next Characters

Just trying to gather information: How survivable are low-level next characters, in your opinion?

Just one MMO or a stable of them?

We (wife, daughter, and myself) play one at a time, but I don't think we've ever played more than 3-4 months before losing interest. Tabletop games hold my interest a lot more. But MMOs are good for quick, 3d diversions when nothing else is available...

Wizards Transitioning to a new community site 9/9

That would be accurate. I cannot figure out why they did this, and, given that they were going to do it, why they didn't test more. It's going to give a lot of people a horrible impression of WoTC and their competence. Then again, thinking of the insane implementation of their online tools in...

    D&D 5E (2014) Wizard's Dnd Next Blog has disappeared.

Yeah, the new forums are awful. Wonder how _that_ decision got made...

    D&D 5E (2014) Old settings coming back?

Unless they are licensing them so that third-parties can work on them, I don't think I care. I haven't been that impressed with WoTC's own work on settings over the life of 4e.

D&D 5E (2014) Are DMs the Swing Vote?

Your description strikes me as curious... "pull a single monster from a book"? I use the monster builder (online Adventure Tools). If you are talking about DMing 4e but aren't using the online tools, I think your opinion, while valid for your case, might not be representative. I don't think 4e...

D&D 3.x the worst thing about 4e is the best thing about 3e...

I make up all the material for my games, so I haven't really had to care about adventure support.

    Revisiting 4th Edition

I never let the players decide on their items. Either I give them specific intended pieces, or I have them draw from a hand of pieces I've chosen. (We use index cards for treasure.) I do agree with the criticism that 4e gives out too much magical loot, but it's not a huge problem, IMO. When I...

    Are we fair to WotC?

Pretty much what I was going to say. I'm not crazy about 5e, and I'm disappointed that they seem to be disinterested in continuing many aspects of 4e. But it's not personal. Hasbro is just a big, faceless company that wants to make money. If they are taking D&D in another direction, it's because...

D&D 5E (2014) Final playtest packet due in mid September.

Pollsters know whom they have called and who has or has not answered their questions, but non-response bias is still a problem.

D&D 5E (2014) Final playtest packet due in mid September.

Good point. These aren't random samples, so it's a little hard to deduce what the survey reports mean. If you don't like the look of the packet but don't bother to respond because you haven't playtested it, you aren't included. Sounds like we'll know soon enough, though. ATM, I'm going to pass.

D&D 5E (2014) Can D&D Next Unite Fans of Different Editions? I think there is some hope now.

I see folks saying this all the time, but the people I know who picked up D&D in the last 5 years (including me) did, in fact, pick it up "from scratch", i.e., with the help of other players with no experience. I question how true this is.
