    D&D 5E (2014) Arctic Endurance Rules

For a long time now I have been working on a system for implementing cold-weather survival rules into my 5th edition game. I ended up taking some rules in the old AD&D module "The Great Glacier" and modifying them for 5th edition. I've made some tweaks to my initial version after my group...

D&D 5E (2014) Back to DnD after 12 years break. DM-ing questions thread.

You're right, one of the things you'll notice with 5e is that the actual CR of a monster varies widely. Most creatures are a bit weaker than you might think, going solely by CR rating. Of course, the way you as the DM run the monster, the number of monsters in the encounter, and other factors...

Critical Role Delve into Critical Role's campaign setting with co-writer James Haeck!

I'm not sure what this means. The people who made up Critical Role started as a group of friends playing together privately a few years ago. When they were asked to have their sessions online, it started out small but grew a ton because they are fun to watch and have an in-depth role-playing...

Critical Role Delve into Critical Role's campaign setting with co-writer James Haeck!

The production value and art looks a lot better than I was expecting. Since Faerun is the world I DM and I've put in a lot of time learning it in and out, I always hope that someone else puts time into learning and DMing a campaign setting that is mostly unknown to me. So I'm hoping I can...

D&D 5E (2014) Question about the Nightstone in Storm King's Thunder

Hi all. I am using parts of Storm King's Thunder in my ongoing campaign. In the beginning, the Nightstone is taken in the city of the same name by cloud giants. Does it ever show back up in the adventure? I haven't found it, and while I haven't read the entire AP because of a busy schedule, I've...

D&D 5E (2014) A Maze that works in actual play?

I haven't read through all the mechanics of your maze, and they might be awesome. But I thought I'd also throw into the conversation my feelings that the Xonthal's Tower maze in The Rise of Tiamat is awesome, and a clever way to make a magical maze feel like a magical maze without getting bogged...

D&D 5E (2014) To own 5E books or not to own 5E books that is the Question

Tell them that the Player's Handbook is only $30 on Amazon. And that's an incredible value for playing a super fun game with friends once a week for a year or more. I've played with my current group for over two years now. That $30 investment is well worth it. I mean, geeze, $30 is just one meal...

D&D 5E (2014) Which Homebrew Rules do you use? Fixes, styles of game, pillars, etc.

I like some of your houserules, but this one massively nerfs druids, way more than is necessary in my opinion.

D&D 5E (2014) Which Homebrew Rules do you use? Fixes, styles of game, pillars, etc.

Some of these house rules I've swiped from others I've seen posted here. The resurrection house rule is essentially the same as used on Critical Role with one difference. Slow, Natural Healing: Characters naturally heal for 1 HP per day per character level after a long rest. So if you are 10th...

D&D 5E (2014) Do you think the monk has too few ki points? And my proposal.

I think this is a little bit apples to oranges. A paladin also has lay on hands for a pool of healing that doesn't use spell points. They also have their auras. They also have channel divinity for special bonus abilities. When I play a paladin, I feel like I have a more balanced range of varying...

D&D 5E (2014) Do you think the monk has too few ki points? And my proposal.

Have you actually played a monk yourself? I ask because in my experience, at low levels, a monk burns through ki in half of medium-length a fight, or if you're conservative with ki, they will last one fight. Monks don't rely on ki only, of course, but ki is a big part of what drives the monk's...

D&D 5E (2014) Do you think the monk has too few ki points? And my proposal.

I agree that at higher levels, particularly above 10, the monk has plenty of ki by then. I like your suggestion that a flatter curve might be better. Maybe from levels 2 - 8 there could be a slight increase that begins to merge back to 1 per level beyond that.

D&D 5E (2014) Do you think the monk has too few ki points? And my proposal.

I was discussing the monk with a player in my group. We both agreed that the monk gets too few ki points and is one of the weaker classes for that reason. Monks get 1 ki per level, so at third level the monk has 3 ki points. With 3 ki points at that level, the monk can do a couple of things in a...

D&D 5E (2014) Rank of The Red Wizards - Forgotten Realms Lore

I have been running a big, long Forgotten Realms campaign, and I've done tons of study over the last year. Your videos strangely seem to mirror my own study and preparation. What I mean is, when I am doing some study on the Harpers, you put out a Harpers video. When I do some study on Thay, you...

D&D 5E (2014) Chris Perkins talks Tomb of Annihilation on Dungeon Life

I didn't see this posted yet, so I apologize if it was and this is a re-post. he offers a lot of interesting tidbits in the video interview. (Ring of Winter confirmed; Open format for this adventure and will be similar to how Curse of Strahd was done; he gives a hint about future adventure...

The New D&D Adventure Is - Tomb of Annihilation!

That's creative, and I like the story idea. But the problem is it forces me to have to deal with the situation of Mezro being destroyed in some way or another, when maybe I don't want that storyline at all in my campaign world to begin with. It is what it is. I'm hoping the basic background info...

The New D&D Adventure Is - Tomb of Annihilation!

I'm both excited and nervous for this. My campaign is set in the older Forgotten Realms. circa 1372 DR. So I ignore any changes that have happened after that and rely on earlier content. Because of that, Mezro in my world has never been destroyed. I hope this AP has enough useful information...

D&D 5E (2014) Has anyone ran an encounter (or fought) with The Kraken form the MM?

I believe the danger level of encounters is very DM dependent. For a long time when I was first DMing, I was very concerned about not making things too difficult for my players. I was afraid of creating a TPK. So in a lot of subconscious (and sometimes not-so-subconscious) ways I would go easy...

    D&D 5E (2014) Why FR Is "Hated"

I mean this is true. But I also enjoy having a world where there are some high-level wizards or other characters my players can run into from time to time. It makes for interesting story-telling. For example, my current group just met one of the Seven Sisters of Mystra. They are curious and...
