Starting a new campaign -- Suggestions Wanted

For something dark Ravenloft is a good D&D setting, while I find it is fairly magical with all the undead and dark monsters running around. Alternatively, you could use modified grey hawk with low magic, there's probably a variant in the DMG(don't have it in front of me). Dark Sun (though no...

Spell Point System to Replace Standard Spell Progression?

To the best of my knowledge, Unearthed arcana also has a variant for a spell point system in D&D.

I disagree and say that RPGs are a form of storytelling. For though the events in a 'story' have already passed through the pen of the writer, they are not a 'past' they are a 'present'. A book is read in the present, what transpires happens in the present of the book. Even in a non-fiction...

    Darksun: Anyone still playing?

aye, I'm working on a campaign using the 3.x dark sun from athas.org edit: i like the defiler in this version, lots of cool ways to play it out

    Making a sniper

I built a sniper for a set of NPCs in a Dark Sun campaign I'm working on. Here's the feat breakdown (human fighter 6) Point Blank Shot Precise Shot Far Shot Sharpshooting Concentrate Fire* Sniper*(reduces hide penalty) Weapon Focus(longbow) Weapon Specialization Why did I use longbow? - more...

Do Geomancer's suck? And what to do about it.

Now, if I'm remembering it correctly, you can only up one spellcaster level per level(either arcane or divine, but not both). This happens to be the real weakness in the class, where they lose all the spellcasting levels. Since the geomancer build has to be split arcane/divine right from the...

    Whose "property" are the PCs?

Depending, perhaps enough time has passed that all the other pcs are dead - or elsewhere, they are perhaps legends or mythical heroes passed down from one generation to the next. Maybe they got stuck in another part of the world, and just decided it was better to remain there than come back to...

    Average level

divided by 6, but the answer is right numerically speaking. I play in a group with 7 pcs and 1 dm, so we have our average party level. When I create encounters, I usually add 1 or 2 to the EL, possible more depending. It's kind of a guess and check thing, see whats good and whats not. Some...

    Starting Cash for Complete Classes

Perhaps this isn't helpful, but you could give them a starting cash equivalent to their core classes. Or instead, you could mix them. Like for the hexblade take the roll for the fighter and roll for a caster and combine them then average them. Or you could just use the fighter cash.

    Help me stop my Player!

I would suggest, let this run it's course. I mean, let him do it. It doesn't matter, people notice when half a village or more of people disappear, especially in a world with a smaller population. Then send an army of clerics and paladins to destroy the evil menace. Otherwise, persuade him...

Hitting friends in meelee with missle weapons

While the rules indicate that the covering creature takes the damage instead of the creature being aimed at, I think this should only be the case when the attack role that missed the enemy and hit the covering creature meets or exceeds that creatures armor class. Alternatively another attack...

Alter Selt, Disguise Self, and the Disguise Skill

I am currently playing a changeling bard in an Eberron campaign, and he specializes in disguising, bluffing, and diplomacy and such skills, though not really to the point of munchikinism. He recently levelled to level 4 and gained his level 2 bard spells. I chose alter self and glitterdust...

DMs - Do you ask for your players character sheets?

I know which of my players need help with their sheets, mostly because they are new to the game, so I help the make the character in the first place and ensure it is correct so I don't have to look at it so much later. I also help those players with levelling so they get it right and learn how...

    Is this character too pwerful?

I'm too dubious of my players stats to see it as a real roll, but rolling in front of people sort of fixes that anyway. There's some insane things I've seen come across my table, one character had three 18s and nothing below a 15 or a 16. He ended up with something like a 72 point buy...

    Petrification

There's a mention of it in the DMG 3.5e This doesn't really help from the point of view of questions, I'm not sure what other mentions are made. 2) No, because the spell doesn't mention that a save is required. -or- Yes, because it could be seen as the same effect as stone to flesh, though...

    Persistent image.

You can't get it to react or interact with outside forces(ie, another intelligent creature), unless it's part of the script you set up when you cast it. You can use "visual, auditory, olfactory and thermal components." It's quite a versatile spell, so you can do a fairly large amount of stuff...

Critical Hits with touch special attacks?

Well, as I'm just looking at the MM 3.5e right now, and the only hag in there that does damage on a special touch attack is the green hag(which deals 2d4 instead, but the concept is the same). The touch can be criticalled as it is a rolled attack. If you criticalled with the hag that deals...

max strength bonus for composite bows

Maybe creature size could be used more as a determining factor in that than, say, the weapon size. The weapon size gives too much disadvantage to smaller weapons, and too much to bigger(assuming you can find a big 'nough thing) Usually a bigger creature will have a bigger weapon anyway, so might...

    D&D 3.x PHB3.5 UMD example question

It's just a possible interpretation I thought of when reading the rules, nothing specific. Just one way of doing it. The mentality is that: I've figured out how this thing works, and got it to work once, thus I can do it again with less problems. Just a way of thinking about things, that's all.

    Elven Bladesingers

It doesn't say otherwise, so yeah, probably. The full attack just says you can use all your attacks/two weapon fighting/double weapon., it doesn't specify how the attacks must be used(ranged/melee).
