Serenity - Subject, R. Tam (5th viral marketing clip added!)

Excuse me, but how did fans of some other TV show leave Farscape out to dry? Seriously, the network cancelled your show, not the fans of some other show. Get mad at the network. Don't get mad at the fans of other shows because their show had the fortune to not get cancelled.

Resenting superheroes, and the real world

On one board or another (I don't think it was this one), I once posted a thread about the "unsung heroes of the Justice League Universe" or a similar title. The essense of the thread was that I found the real heroes to be the cops, firefighters, soldiers and other non-superpowered people you...

Escape from Hurricane Katrina + Live Blog from N.O. Hell

That's what I'd prefer. Just buy the low parts that flooded, which are the new parts as you say, and rebuild people's homes elsewhere. Don't rely on the levys to hold or this will just happen again unless you really over-engineer the flood controls, which they won't for cost reasons. It sounds...

Escape from Hurricane Katrina + Live Blog from N.O. Hell

Yeah, that did occur to me. I'm sure it would be bad for some people. I suppose it would depend on the person and how it was done. I suspect many of the people it would most affect may not be going back. I live in San Antonio (where we got 25,000 evacuees) and the sentiment I keep hearing on...

    Help me brainstorm for Halloween

A suit and tie with a briefcase and an "ID Card" that prominently reads "IRS, Legal Division". That ought to scare the bejesus out of just about anyone. Failing that, if you can actually make prosthetics, perhaps a mind flayer.

I'd love another four or five Stargate franchises, though it would make it hard to keep up with them all. While I wouldn't mind seeing SciFi pickup Firefly for new episodes, I never got into the whole "blaming other shows for my favorites not being on the air" thing that keeps popping up.

    <Rant> Where has courtesy gone?

Right, that's not the connotation I'm talking about. I know some people use it like you mention, but I've also heard it used with the same sort of annoyance, aggrivation and general distaste some people have when the paladin in the party is being actively Lawful Good (or they may call it...

Escape from Hurricane Katrina + Live Blog from N.O. Hell

It occured to me that they might want to turn flooded streets into a design feature and have parts of New Orleans be like Venice. They could do the whole romantic gondola ride bit and everything.

What's Sci Fi Got that Fantasy Don't Got?

I suppose it depends on the religion and the individual. Mostly, I think people just don't think about it. I think in the absence of any challenge to their religious beliefs, people won't think about whether the lack of any religion at all makes sci fi "evil".

Escape from Hurricane Katrina + Live Blog from N.O. Hell

The historical sites are ok because the original New Orleans was built above sea level. It's been later expansion that moved below sea level. When the city is rebuilt, any area below sea level should be turned into parks or something and subsequent development below sea level should be banned.

    Celine Dion, of all things

That's just the chain itself. I understand the family has donated 8 million more.

    <Rant> Where has courtesy gone?

A thought that strikes me (no pun intended) about the whole violence discussion. It seems to me that this sort of thing is why many cultures developed codes of conduct of various kinds. On the one hand, they recognized that they couldn't have everyone just running around using violence...

    <Rant> Where has courtesy gone?

It's some of both, I think. Another example: Ever notice how in recent decades calling someone a "boy scout" has become a derisive term? They strive to be nice, polite and courteous and stress doing the right thing. {Sarcasm}How horrible!{/Sarcasm} (And let's not talk about the politics...

What's Sci Fi Got that Fantasy Don't Got?

Actually, one big difference between fantasy and Sci Fi is that Sci Fi tends to ignore religion as much as possible. Fantasy tends to have some sort of fictional religion as a fairly integral part of the story and setting as well as addressing other topics (like magic) that are sensitive to...

SCI FI to reinstate full-length openings for Stargate: SG-1 and Atlantis

I've got to agree here. I just fast forward through the openings of shows. About the only one I've actually taken the time to watch recently has been the opening for Rome. I really hope they don't go the "Spoiler" route that Battlestar Galactica did. I don't need to see spoiler scenes for...

    [PCGEN] Adding a new class

I think you might need to do it by manually editing the files too. The last time I tried something like this with PCGen (admittedly several months ago), I couldn't get the edit screens to do what I wanted and the advice I got was essentially that.

Louisiana is set to be *smacked*

I didn't see that part, but I'm not surprised given the terrible reputation the New Orleans PD has. I was watching the footage of looters and kept wondering if law enforcement could use the tapes to identify and prosecute looters.

What kind of boy scout troop were you in?

    World of Warcraft FUBAR?

The latency bar implies that there is a delay between your computer and the server. It isn't necessarily your computer, but could be something in between or at their end.

    An epiphany

A couple of things I see as having given players more power, or at least the expectation of more power, are magic item creation and wizard spells. In previous editions, magic item creation was a rare thing that the DM had to make up rules for and he could make them as tough as he wanted...
