D&D 4E A thought on WotC's imperative to continue to digitally support 4e.

First of all, DDI isn't going away. They want those digital subscriptions and they want them to expand. But you can expect that they're going to try to wean you off 4E. If 4E players have no reason to buy the current products, then they are no longer customers. You don't provide support if that...

Would you get behind Race levels?

You know, the Dwarves as short humans is just the thing. In the sources that inspired D&D, being an Elf or a Dwarf made you radically different. Leveling race would keep that feel. Not leveling race would make everyone "funny-looking humans" after a few levels.

D&D 5E (2014) How quickly should ability scores increase in 5e?

Picture this scenario. Ability scores have absolutely no bonuses or penalty number associated with them. They function almost purely as a the resource for skills and saves. Your ability to attack and damage is a function of your class and feats alone. In this scenario, I say bring on the racial...

Would you get behind Race levels?

Yeah, it's definitely a tough nut to crack. You don't want to level up anything that steps on the toes of Class and Theme, at least not too much. But that's why we pay professionals to do it.

Suggestion: Don't have size affect ability scores

I think it might be easy to implement. Giant, Str 20 (+15 to skills). There, done. His save is on par with a strong PC but his ability to do stuff with Str is much greater. Use the skill bonus in opposed Str checks and still good. As for the Str adding to the to-hit or damage, well I don't see...

Would you get behind Race levels?

So there is talk about making Race an equal part of your character. They have also let us know that there will now be Themes in addition to Race and Class. In the situation I imagine, not based on any facts, I saw Theme as being something that goes up in level consecutively with Class and of...

Excited About Race / Class / Theme

I picture the Race + Class + Theme as being of equal importance, both thematically and mechanically. I think it was already mentioned that you could focus on Theme when leveling. I would like to see Class focus on damage and Theme focus on non-combat. Didn't they say something about skills being...

L&L: No Races as Classes, I reckon..

Well, there is a work-around, but I don't know that I'd really suggest it. 5E will have choices of race + class + theme. It is entirely possible to create a class called Elf and a theme called Elf. You can then just choose Elf all the way down the line. However, that class and theme are probably...

    Pics From The DDXP Playtest

I see some text in the DM's notes. Light source is dim and sounds are screams and the hiss of burning flesh. Now if only we had that ridiculous TV ability to "enhance the image."

Combat Rounds: How Long Should They Be?

Eh. A round is a round in-game no matter how much time it is supposed to be. Things last a number of rounds. Not much functional difference. However, you would be surprised how long 6 seconds is when you're fighting for your life. If somebody is choking you, not as in practice but seriously...

A new Edition/Iteration of D&D is really necessary?

You might think that, but I hadn't heard of 4E Essentials 2 weeks ago. I've been playing Pathfinder and have had no need to see what's happening in 4E. So my personal feeling is that 4E Essentials is a great way to keep current 4E players interested, which just isn't enough anymore.

    Stay Classy!!!

Yeah, me too. On the other hand, I have to point out that because the game is in Pre-Alpha now IS the best time to complain about things you must or must not have. Waiting until release day is too late and waiting for open playtesting is too late for major stuff. BTW, if you want to make your...

D&D 5E (2014) Reality Check: What 5E Will NOT Be

Note that they "hope" to make it compatible with other editions. I take that to mean they have no clue about that yet. I expect quite a bit of "re-imagining" your character into a 5E character, but perhaps a bit less to grab an older module. I don't care, I don't use modules so nanananaphoophoo...

A new Edition/Iteration of D&D is really necessary?

If WotC hadn't been bought by Hasbro, who knows. But look at it from Hasbro's perspective. They've got the top name-brand recognition IP in fantasy gaming, in roleplaying in general. Is this giving them more traction or are they losing ground in the market? That analysis is embarrassing. If...

After DDXP, how are you feeling about D&En?

The thing that makes me really nervous about playtests is the fact that I intend to have a campaign that lasts years and playtests are very small game. What seems like innovation at a playtest can quickly become old hat in the long run. I understand that WotC employees are going to be running...

    Odd-Numbered Ability Scores

From what I've seen so far, I wouldn't be shocked if ability scores gave no + at all. Each number just is what it is, used for saves and skills. If so, it would divorce bonuses to stats "funneling" options.

After DDXP, how are you feeling about D&En?

Yeah, that IS pretty much the system, I think. They didn't out and out say it, but it seems heavily implied.

Six Saving Throws - One for Each Ability Score?

This can be as simple as saying, no more than 3 ability score shifts per session, whether used for saves or skills. If they don't include even a suggestion of a limiter here, then this will become abused rapidly.

What Does Your Perfect Edition Look Like?

These have been stated as in, so unless they change their minds... This is kinda there. You can ban one option or the other in your game, but both options seem assumed.
