    Humorous descriptions for skill failures/successes

While a 1 isn't an instant failure, oftentimes it's at least a failure, in my experience running. We just have overwhelming sarcasm. GM: Spot checks, all. Kogel: I rolled a 19, so with all my bonuses... 38. Naoko: "It's a bird, it's a plane, it's Alpha Centauri!" I had a rogue who rolled a...

Cloaks, rings, robes, hats, bucklers, and codpieces.

Two games, same universe. In one game, the players hardly talk about their character's clothes at all, to the point of me not remembering at all what they have. In the other game, they're very particular about what their characters have on, and I'm using that to my advantage, as for the last...

What oddities have made it into your game?

In the Final Fantasy game I run, a random encounter against two Tonberries went awry when I completely forgot that the summoner in the party had just acquired the Tonberry King materia, and suddenly these two fodder monsters were face to face with their king. Suddenly they had two Tonberry...

calling all GMs - advice on handling a selfish player

That may be a huge step to fixing the problem. He's big on knowledge -- open the knowledge of the game up to him. You may have him maxing out synergy bonuses in a few months to make more incredible moves than Tony Hawk in zero gravity, but at least there'll be numbers for it.

DMs: Fight to Win or Fight for Fun?

I think you did fine, from what I read. If you're really concerned about it, you could rule that the CDG dropped the PC to -7 or -8 or something, to give a chance for a last-second save from the others, but you didn't do anything wrong. Did they remember that paralysis could be followed up by a...

calling all GMs - advice on handling a selfish player

Man. That's a heckuva situation, there. From what you've said, I think the best thing to do is roll with the punches, and give in a bit if it keeps the rest of the game going. I know one trouble player can bring a whole game down, and if everyone else is okay with accomodating him, just bend a...

Expanding D&D adventures past mere combat

Pointers always help, though. Even if it's just notecards for the NPCs covering attitude and knowledge instead of base attack and save bonuses. That'd be more useful if you have a ton of NPCs, though. How many rules would you want on this side of things? We've got skills for Diplomacy and Bluff...

Expanding D&D adventures past mere combat

No problem -- I cut that part out, actually, didn't realize a moderator chimed in on it, and it was off-topic, so my error there. That's interesting to me, because I've found it goes the other way for me. I'm a bit more freeform with combat -- I get the stats in order and a basic guideline...

Expanding D&D adventures past mere combat

I homebrew, so I don't use published adventures, so I can't remark too much on them. I have found that my players enjoy the noncombat encounters a lot, so I try to run more of them. They require a lot more work -- my session write-ups for combat sessions tend to be about two pages long, with...

    Why would PCs wear capes?

That's true, but how many adventurers have met a grisly fate when a team of horses drawing a carriage stepped on the end of their cape and then they were trampled? It's not a pretty sight! A strong cape could be very handy in a number of situations. Take it off and tie it to two heavy things on...

    Do you Assign NPC stats?

I stat out important details for NPCs -- I have one character who is obsessed with disarm, so combat guys always need to have that ready. Standard ones, not even close. I have NPCs that have been in 20 sessions, and I couldn't begin to tell you what their Intelligence or Charisma is. (By the...

Would you still play RPG:s if...

I will keep playing RPGs as long as my friends show up to play them too. I will run games as long as my friends, my players, show up and want to play. It doesn't matter if all support for the hobby dries up and goes away -- if I still have friends that want to play, I will keep playing. We've...

Do your NPCs ever sucker the PCs?

I try to, but they normally figure it out through some investigation and covering their tracks. It doesn't help things that they have a "Never trust anyone with a name" policy. So now they're on a train with THIRTY named NPCs! You've never seen such panic... So far everyone that's suckered them...

Running for Less Than Four Players

That's been one of the things -- I love the roleplay aspect of smaller groups, and run towards that. The other GM is a combat fan, and runs really good combats, but they can overwhelm a smaller group and introducing NPCs or a power group to help make us feel like we're not really needed or...

Running for Less Than Four Players

My standard gaming group is myself and two players, and I'm quite used to it, but with the GM duties not always resting on my shoulders, one of my players is having a little trouble figuring out the best way to run for just two people. My suggestions aren't always working for him, and I'm not...

    Failing motivation to adventure

I was in a group where the mage was trying to domesticate/clean up the barbarian and that was their major thing, and when the other fighter in the party needed to go clear something up with her family, they felt no real need to do anything about it because they were busy (the mage and...

    Your Best Villain

I have three. Caelis Balthazar, a well-respected scholar and sage who stumbled across the ruins of an ancient evil underneath the capital city of the country and realized that the evil's purpose was remaking the world every time there was a critical flaw. He now believes he can remake the world...

How far do you travel to game?

My gaming chair is my computer chair, and we game in my bedroom here so music can be played. My chair is less than six inches away from the foot of my bed. So I don't exactly go far. I once gamed -while- traveling 1,000 miles. Does that count for anything?

What monster killed your first PC?

The only thing that has killed any of my characters is campaign death. I've escaped from numerous deadly situations (good ol' Evasion). I've also never permanently killed a PC in my homebrew games, though one PC has died five times by overestimating his abilities. There are drawbacks to death in...

    Too Many NPCs?

I run two games for two sets of players, so there's an NPC traveling with each of them. In both parties he's an upfront fighter-type, mostly there to round the party out. He's built on the same stats as they are, so it's balanced. However, I fudge rolls. Just like one poster said, if a major...
