    Gamer Significant Others

My girlfriend, a player in my Final Fantasy d20 game, just moved in over the weekend. :) We've been together for over four years, she got into gaming last year.

    Everything got serious

Consider this yoinked! I can't think of a weirder way to confuse and freak out my players. :)

    Balance and Character Death

I did this for a character in my 2-PC game who seemed to find a way to be at the source of every explosion/fireblast/critical hit in rhe game. Since then he's toned down the recklessness he approached the game with, but still takes crazy risks, as that's just his style. Is the character dying...

    Hit points at level-up

Did the battle end and then XP was handed out before his party members got him back up on his feet? I know it's group XP, otherwise I'd be asking how he managed to level up while unconscious. "The orc is getting away! Shoot him!" "I'm out of arrows!" "Quick! To the bridge! We'll drop Jim's...

    How do you determine hitpoints?

Max HP all the way! I run a Final Fantasy game, and with the sheer power of spells being tossed around, every little bit helps. It's had no complaints, despite my summoner having a d6 hit die and no Con modifier, and the swordsman having a d10 and a +2 or +3. It means that I can be a little...

Going to my first NFL game!

Well, for the record, just got back from the game -- Arrowhead is LOUD. My head is throbbing. Great game, Redskins couldn't pull it out. Fantastic game and experience, but man, do I have the -worst- headache...

Going to my first NFL game!

Just have to celebrate a bit -- I just got two tickets to go see the Kansas City Chiefs host the Washington Redskins at Arrowhead Stadium this Sunday. I've never been to see an NFL game, and since I moved out here to KC in 2003, I pledged that I'd go see one soon. This is the perfect one to see...

    Stand Up Comedy

Dana Carvey's mid-90's HBO special had me in tears. I can recite the entire "Framin' OJ" segment to this day. I was lucky enough to get to see Mitch Hedburg, Dave Attell, and Lewis Black on their tour in 2003. Mitch was, of couse, -hysterical-, Dave Attell cracked me up more than I thought he...

How would you rule crafting items in a no-XP system?

I picked it up on a whim a while back, wanting a new gaming book to read, and went over it a few times. I don't run a by-the-book game, so a lot of things in there are very helpful. It contains some of the ideas that d20 Modern started, which I use in my game (action points and class defense...

How would you rule crafting items in a no-XP system?

Hey, there's an idea. We are using action points; the player doesn't spend a whole lot of his, so they may be a big help. I'll see what he thinks. I hadn't thought about using action points for that. We may have some innocents' souls in storage; have to check the reserves on those.

How would you rule crafting items in a no-XP system?

I have UA on my bookshelf -- I keep forgetting I have that book. I've got three and a half hours before I can look at it, but I'll take a look tonight. Thanks for the reminder!

How fast do your characters advance in level?

They used to level up every third session (we game weekly, about four hour session each time), but they've really slowed down lately as they get more handles on their abilities. One party leveled up from 10th to 11th right after session 14... we're on 27 now. (Since then I redid about five...

How would you rule crafting items in a no-XP system?

I'm not being too strict -- it's a game based partially off Final Fantasy, so they have a lot more innate abilities, but weapons cost a good deal more. They've got some money which is being poured into rebuilding an island. They're definitely not rich, and I don't worry that they're planning...

How would you rule crafting items in a no-XP system?

I think this goes in here, and not Rules, but if I'm incorrect, just let me know or move it, and I apologize. I don't do XP by the book -- I run a homebrew game, and after a series of difficult battles or at the end of an "arc," as it were, the characters level up. Custom classes, too, so up...

The DM Giveth, so the DM Taketh Away?

Oh, yeah, with it being a spelled-out challenge, or at least something the player knows, I wouldn't find any problem with that at all. I think that's a great adventure idea, trying to defend a wagon from raiding bandits as it goes through ambush-heavy terrain.

    Just out of curiousity

Using a pretty strict rolling method (3d6, in order, you could switch one set but that's all) I had a first-level elven fighter with a 20 Dexterity (rolled the 18, then the racial +2), so I had my nice +5 bonus, there. Of course, his other stats? 10, 11, 11, 10, 11. I should've just named him...

The DM Giveth, so the DM Taketh Away?

While reading Crothian's thread/poll about giving his second level characters 30,000 gp, I saw a fair amount of replies from people stating that then their players would find themselves the targets of all the bandits and thieves in the area, and they they'd be lucky to get back to town to spend...

Rolecall for the Dead - Bring out your dead!

Eberron (two of these are mine, two of these are the other player's): Vel, the human ranger with a dinosaur companion, died when the carraige he was driving could not make the left turn at top speed downhill. He tried valiantly, but you canot cheat death with only a +3 on your skill check...

Why can't you be prepared for a game session

Things come up. It's not as easy as going, "Okay, 7:00-7:20 is character gaming time." These things happen. I'm guilty of it, and I think part of it is GM vs. player thinking. I run two games a week. I write the sessions during lunch breaks (like this one!) at work. I work on stats and music...

    Life changes

Running a game can be very creatively draining and incredibly time-consuming. I run two games a week, and between them, work, and my girlfriend, I have just enough time to watch football and sleep. I take a week off every so often to recharge a bit. I think the important thing is not to do it...
