I'm one of those nostalgic fans and would have picked up a Chronicles setting just for the go back alone, not to mention what I'd pick out of it for my campaign. I flipped through it but it just wasn't there so I left it. It did have some nice art.

Well the origional "rumor" came from the discription in the last WotC catalog for 3.5 which mentions the mini game, so I would say that was the kind of sorta "official" announcement for retailers. Don't think you'll get anything trully "official" till Gamma or maybe Gen-Con.

I only hand my players cheese when they whine :) The PC would have to be and intelligent undead created by another undead using it's create spawn ability. Check the requirements. I could be generic but we are reading from a book for monster characters. The intro states they are monster...
