D&D 4E My compiled list of 4E's WoWisms

Tinker gnome as an identity is highly problematic because of the setting presumptions and the system requirements. If you make that their identity, then the players are going to want the gadgets if they play the race. I don't think they were willing to spare the space for a gadget system, so...

    LIfe Without Alignment

Even in communities with much higher rules understanding than an average game (here, GiantITP) alignment questions turn into huge fights. If even the most hardcore adherents of the system aren't getting the same message from the alignment chapter, then it's useless for any task. Additionally...

D&D 4E My compiled list of 4E's WoWisms

People deny that WOW has influenced 4e because they're sick to death of comparisons like this. I don't understand why even neutral parties want to discuss something that, as far as I can tell, will have zero impact on my or anyone else's 4e experience. Unfortunately, those brave souls who are...

D&D 4E My compiled list of 4E's WoWisms

Given that you're unwilling to anchor yourself to the fact that these supposed "WOWisms" are good or bad, why should we care?

D&D 4E How should 4E deal with the power of fire?

I like fire as it is in 3e just fine, where magical fire effects like fireball don't cause actual fires, and the risk to items is low. I view items as part of the tactical choices made by the player, and I've no interest as a DM in disrupting those choices, just as I have no interest in...

    Questions for the designers.

The designers have already answered the first question. Clear differentiation for devils/demons/dragons, and to make the planes more accessible to lower powered adventurers. You don't like the answer clearly, but that doesn't mean they haven't given the answer. I too would really be...

D&D 4E How do you feel about 4E right *now*? (week of 1/21/08)

Thumbs up. Designers are clearly concerned with the same 3.5 problems I was. The fluff can take a hike, I won't use it, but I don't begrudge it to people who want it. SWSE and Book of Nine Swords are some of my favorite gaming books, so I'm looking forward to 4e.

    WOTC! Give us an update!

You realize they're in the middle of shipping stuff to the printers right now, right?

    Encounter planning wackiness?

It's based on the xp value, so just because 4 monsters of level x equal the xp value you're shooting for with a party of level x doesn't mean the scaling is bad.

    Green Dragon

Lizards generally have some sort of nose horn in the egg to break through the shell, don't they? I know a lot of them grow out of it, but don't they all pretty much start with one?

D&D 4E 4e Rulebook for DDM is up!

Rerolling initiative every round is a holdover from the last version of DDM, and I don't expect to see it in 4e. Additionally, the first edition DDM had unified saves, so that's not really a difference either.

    Why all the healing?

Having lots of healing around allows you to have good skin of your teeth fights (because you don't have to inflate the hit point cap, or base the system around DR whittling) with lots of swings in HP totals while still keeping the starting point for fights relatively stable, which improves the...

Could we please have a non evil/ammoral pact for Warlocks? :)

There's already a prestige class for good warlocks in 3e, so why would you presume that option would be cut off in 4e?

Can the Fighter be Real and Equal to spellcasters?

"you face less hordes of mooks with underbosses and bosses in a building or set of caves, now it seems its more tactical encounter after tactical encounter. That is why I really don't like the whole EL / CR principle from the little that I have seen." This seems nonsensicle to me. How is a...

Can the Fighter be Real and Equal to spellcasters?

As for risky magic, I always liked the wilder for that feel. Since actions will continue to be the king currency of D&D, a wizard class with lower baseline powers who can surpass his fellows while taking significant risks(losing an action is a significant risk), would be okay with me.

worlds and monsters is in my hands

I'm not particularly interested in out of combat info on the monsters. If that can be cut and more solidly balanced monsters included, cut cut cut.. I don't use monsters with their set fluff or even their set appearance generally, just pick and choose them for interesting combats and then add...

Can the Fighter be Real and Equal to spellcasters?

Power level parity amongst PCs is very important to me, because part of the game is tactical, and all of my players deserve to be effective in combat. The current situation, where many of the classes are vastly inferior to the others, contradicts my wish to have people be on equal footing...

Should all things be created equal ?

I'd like to vote for "All Classes should be roughly equally useful both in combat, and out of combat (two discrete comparisons)"

Mike Mearls on Combat vs Non-Combat roles

Could you give a source for this suggestion? This flies in the face of many things thus far revealed about 4e, particularly the radical limitations being applied to wizards, the big bad class of 3e.

Wizards still cast Enchantment, Illusions, Necromancy

The wizard has always been broken because of his ability to outshine people at their roles, which is rooted in his huge flexibility. Slice him up, I say. I always preferred the subclasses anyway. Generalist wizards leave me uninterested.
