    Woo-hoo! Heroes of Horror preview!!

Ditto. Mousie, you're a sick, sick bastard (and I mean that in the best way possible).

does hit point loss = damage

Here's how I have explained the wound/vitality system to players. It's like Buffy. When you've taken vitality points, it's like Buffy in the middle of a fight. She's been knocked around and she's winded, but her hair and makeup are still perfect. When you take wound points, that's like when a...

Which comes first? D&D or Geekiness

I fall into everyone of those categories. Dammit, I've been profiled. I'm officially part of a demographic. Is there no individuality?! PS One of my "hobbies" is sociology - and no, there is no individuality, only variations on a theme. Please let your self-styled "nonconformist" friends...

    Evil helps the wound

I'm reminded on the Path of Ecstacy from the original Followers of Set splatbook (Old World of Darkness). This was a morality that was truly evil - it was a sin for a follower of this path to not indulge in selfish pleasure, it was a sin for a follower to not to lead the innocent into...

    Curbing Cheating

I've never had anyone cheat in my games (that I know of). I'm of the opinion that if I as DM can fudge rolls, the players can as well - it's their game, too. I would hope that they know that what they get out of the game is what they add, and don't fudge as players, but I'm not going to punish...

    "It's just a game."

I would have said 2 or 3, but since I've started freelancing it's moved up to a 4. Fortunately, I have other hobbies to keep it from being a 5.

    When did "Medireview" = Medieval???

There's a difference between dialectal differences in vowel sounds and mangling the order of sounds in a word. Stop "nuculer" proliferation!

    Who are Howard and Leiber?

My point is: Getting a cohesive group from a small percentage of the population together may be hard, but it's not 'bloody slight'. A fantasy world may not have the advantage of the Law of Large Numbers (which may, in part, justify why we're able to have this conversation right now), but it does...

Haven't you just described a gaming group?

    Are Undead Scary?

There's nothing more pathetic than a rogue with a rapier trying to fight a skeleton - "I deftly stab him between the ribs... bugger." And to paraphrase Plan 9 from Outerspace: "Isn't it strange how these humans - who can think - are afraid of those who cannot think - the dead."

    Trouble with Outsider Depiction

I think the general consensus is that celestials and fiends are created rather than bred. So how do they mate with mortals (creating the various planetouched races/templates)? I think of it like Greek gods. When Zeus wanted to fool around with a mortal woman he turned himself into a swan or bull...

    Trouble with Outsider Depiction

I'm reminded of those sociology experiments where they take a group of peers and seperate them into groups and give one group more power than the other, and then things go to custard because memebers of the power group become either corrupt or patronizing, and members of the non-power group...

    Trouble with Outsider Depiction

If you follow the 'fiends and celestials are promoted from petitioners' theory then they can have free will, but the choice of alignement was made long before the creature became an outsider. As for saying an 'always evil race is ridiculous', in this case celestials and fiends make up...

    Who are Howard and Leiber?

There is a modern fanatsy that uses the 'Vancian' magic system: Charmed. Ignoring her innate talents, if a witch wants to cast a spell, she gets it out of her spellbook. And if she has to leave the house, she has to memorize the spell beforehand (in poetry form, no less). Admittedly, they cheat...

    Thoughts on Bards?

Base your bard on Alexander the Great. Choose Oratory as you Perform skill and inspire your troops. You have bardic knowledge becuase you were schooled by the world's greatest philosphers. Don't call your spells by that term - you just have a knack for things, like combat medicine and getting...

    Wizards to publish cyberzine Legendology

Did they really just name-drop folks who died forty plus years before Wizards existed? Man, I hate marketing.

Do wererats really have to be evil?

I'd say killing a quarter the population of europe = evil. Okay, technically it was the bacteria spread by the lice carried by the rats...

"It's not a question of where it grips it..."

My answer to that might be: "That's very clever. Make an Open Locks roll to copy the key." But if you want to be mean, or you know, realistic: "That's very clever. Make a Craft (woodworking) roll to copy the key."

    Hexes or Squares?

Squares. Why in no particular order: It's core. It's easy to make. Buidlings are generaly squarish. And now that I think about it, medieval combat, from personal experience, is all about the square. Reenactors in NZ even call attacking someone on the diagonal a 'bishop' - I think that says it all.
