Were you predisposed to enjoy RPG's?

I don't know. Prior to playing D&D my activities included: playing with Legos (castle); playing with G.I. Joes; playing Hockey; playing Baseball; collecting Baseball Cards. I read a lot of books on history - particularily English history. My favorite movies were Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves...

    Sadly, no. Because...

    Shifting focus to the group

This is very similar to what I am currently doing in my campaign. The PCs began play as part of an adventuring guild - one focused on exploration and treasure gathering. Within the guild each player came up with three to four PCs each. I try to keep the individual adventures short (1-7...

Why do DM's like Dark, gritty worlds and players the opposite?

And this is why we have so much miscommunication in these types of debates - everyone has their definition of what these words mean. I am not saying that that is the only definition of what "Grim & Gritty" means but it is certainly one possible definition. And it needs to be considered as well...

Why do DM's like Dark, gritty worlds and players the opposite?

Why the need for rules to support "Grim & Gritty" play? Can I not play it as a overriding theme or mood? From Merriam-Webster: Grim ~ 2b. Somber, Gloomy; 3. Ghastly, Repellent, or Sinister in Character Gritty ~ 2. Courageously Persistent: Plucky Most players I know enjoy playing the...

Why do DM's like Dark, gritty worlds and players the opposite?

Realistic when referring to a setting; courageously persistent when referring to a character.

    Fantasy Gaming Names

Hah! A few years ago I joined a Mutants & Masterminds game - until that point I knew little about comics - I made up my character and was looking for a name so I grabbed two books off of my shelf. Emma by Jane Austen and a book of poetry by Robert Frost so... Emma Frost. Needless to say everyone...

    Fantasy Gaming Names

 I like real world names for my characters and NPCs. Currently I am playing: Rhys of Elmshire; Masoud of Ket; Kristil of the Brightaxe; and Virgil the Wary Swordknight.

Character ability v. player volition: INT, WIS, CHA

:hmm: To prevent us from talking past each other allow me to say that in general I give my players a lot of latitude in how they develop their character. All I ask is that they respect each other. That, unfortunately, is not always the case. In my experience, players often turn to the DM to sort...

Products you'd love to see published (but probably never will)

A rerelease of the 1e adventures, in paper form, brought up to modern day layout and printing standards. Something like they did with the 4e Village of Hommlet only without the changes. :)

Character ability v. player volition: INT, WIS, CHA

It is my opinion that a DM's job is to ensure that ALL players at the table are having fun. Players entrust a certain level of authority to the DM. As a result, it often becomes the DM's job to reign in some players because OTHER players are not fully enjoying themselves. This has been the...

I guess I really do prefer simplicity

Why does the fighter need to be made exciting for you when it is already exciting for me? Personally, I like having the OPTION of playing a very simple character sometimes and a very complex character at other times.

Wizards in 4E have been 'neutered' argument...

I would just say "We are going to give the new edition a try and you are welcome to join us." - and leave it at that.

Why do DM's like Dark, gritty worlds and players the opposite?

Edit: Removed parts quoting Majoru Oakheart. These fit my definition of "dark and gritty".
  15. The Ghost

Why do DM's like Dark, gritty worlds and players the opposite?

I have never thought that a DM "winning" means the PCs "loosing". To me, a DM winning is when the players come up to me after a game and say "Thanks, I had an awesome time!".

Why do DM's like Dark, gritty worlds and players the opposite?

This is only half-true for me. As both a player and DM I prefer games that are dark and gritty. I am not much of a fan of the "colorful world" as you described it. I like the idea of playing a basic human pig farmer, who was conscripted to serve in the war, and now is trying to make the world a...

Boxed Text - A Railrod Sign, or Great tool for Immersion? Both?

I tend to react negatively toward any text, description, or otherwise that tells me how my character thinks or acts. However, if the text boxes are written as just a description of what we see, hear, or smell, then I am fine with it.

How many people are buying less books for 4E than previous editions?

Less. So far for 4e I have only purchased the PHB, DMG, MM, and one year of DDI. Compared to 3.5e where I own about 80% of the WotC released books as well as a couple third-party books. I think I have reached the point where I am more interested in books on flavor* than I am in crunch. I have...

How many from your group(s) use ENW?

Of the 20 or so gamers I know I am the only one with an ENWorld account. A few a them use the WotC message boards though.

How many cycles of 4E core books will you buy?

I bought the Player's Handbook I, Dungeon Master's Guide I, Monster Manual I, and one year of DDI. That is probably all I will buy of 4e.
