D&D 5E (2024) Command is the Perfect Encapsulation of Everything I Don't Like About 5.5e

Even if nobody is using Command for anything but Grovel or Flee it's a solid spell in terms of raw DPS is you have a fairly heavy melee front line. Hell, it can be basically Save or Die if you use it for Flee if it's on a critter that's surrounded by a bunch of your party members and that's very...

D&D 5E (2024) Command is the Perfect Encapsulation of Everything I Don't Like About 5.5e

Nobody ever tried to come up with another verb? Ever? Discussing D&D online makes me realize that other people play D&D very VERY differently from each other. Which is probably the source of a lot of arguments. For the kind of groups I played in not coming up with things like crazy new verbs to...

D&D 5E (2024) Command is the Perfect Encapsulation of Everything I Don't Like About 5.5e

Yup TSR-D&D, 3e, and 5e have open-ended Command spells. 3.5e, 4e, and 5.5e have lock-down versions of Command where only certain verbs are allowed. This makes Command a pretty damn good indicator for whether an edition is more "rulings not rules" or "rules not rulings." The upshot of this is...

D&D 5E (2024) Command is the Perfect Encapsulation of Everything I Don't Like About 5.5e

Suggestion got weirdly buffed in that it no longer has to be a "reasonable" suggestion. I also like the restriction of Command since you only get a single word you have to be creative. If you can just tell them to do anything they want then there's little thought involved. Also I really don't...

D&D 5E (2024) Command is the Perfect Encapsulation of Everything I Don't Like About 5.5e

Command is indeed a strong spell in 5e, but in terms of raw combat power it's gotten a buff not a nerf in that the restrictions on not being able to cast it on undead and critters that don't speak your language has been removed. In any case if you think that Command is OPed there are plenty of...

D&D 5E (2024) Motley Fool Prediction: New Dungeons & Dragons Edition Won't Help Hasbro Much

Yeah the main distinction here is: "is Hasbro focused on selling people D&D game product or focused on selling D&D-licensed stuff (D&D movies, t-shirts, computer games, etc.)." I think it makes more sense for Hasbro to focus on the later, since D&D is a famously cheap hobby all things considered...

D&D 5E (2024) Command is the Perfect Encapsulation of Everything I Don't Like About 5.5e

Command is the Perfect Encapsulation of Everything I Don't Like About 5.5e Let’s take a look in how 5.5e changed the Command spell: 1. The requirement that the target knows the caster’s language and not be undead has been removed. 2. Only pre-set Command words are allowed instead of “You...

    D&D 5E (2024) D&D 2024 Rules Oddities (Kibbles’ Collected Complaints)

I'm more worried about Spiked Growth cheesegrater strategies than Spirit Guardians. WRT Spirit Guardians I was originally responding to someone who said that you should avoid exploits by just not playing with people who used exploits, when said exploit is "walking around a bit so that more...

    D&D 5E (2024) D&D 2024 Rules Oddities (Kibbles’ Collected Complaints)

Yeah things can be very different at different tables. I had someone on Reddit tell me that they'd NEVER seen ANYONE EVER use Command for anything but "flee" or "grovel" and my brain broke.

    D&D 5E (2024) D&D 2024 Rules Oddities (Kibbles’ Collected Complaints)

We had someone upthread saying that we shouldn't play with people who engage in strategies like walking around with SG cast to get more people within range. I was mostly replying to that (in my view) deeply flawed line of thinking. As for SG power it seems that it'll be even more of a must-have...

    D&D 5E (2024) D&D 2024 Rules Oddities (Kibbles’ Collected Complaints)

Yeah, I just know at my table my players wouldn't think to do weapon juggling, it's just not the kind of thing they do so it would never have any impact on me in actual play. They WOULD however get confused about how many attacks they get while mixing WMs and feats. Cheesegrater strategies and...

    D&D 5E (2024) D&D 2024 Rules Oddities (Kibbles’ Collected Complaints)

And now the numbers DO get excessive so the DM gets to make a choice between disallowing something that is situational and matches the fiction and letting monks do ludicrous damage. I don't like that. Similarly Spirit Guardians now gets OPed if people use the deeply broken exploit of "walk...

    D&D 5E (2024) D&D 2024 Rules Oddities (Kibbles’ Collected Complaints)

I think there's a very real and important distinction to be drawn between: A. Rules lawyering poorly-worded rules (weapon juggling). and B. Using very obvious tactics that would be immediately obvious to any half-way smart in-game character. Dragging a dude through spikes makes perfect sense...

    D&D General Who shouldn't play D&D

That's all true. You can totally play D&D without any combat. Just like you can totally run a mass battle game with D&D rules or a science fiction game with D&D rules. There are just other RPGs that would be VASTLY VASTLY better suited to such a campaign than D&D.

D&D 5E (2024) Are single class martials still going to be viable in 2024?

The only issue with that is that you get classes like rogue with perfectly fine baseline damage, but worse defenses which is more noticeable with monk defenses being buffed. Mod Edit: language

    D&D 5E (2024) D&D 2024 Rules Oddities (Kibbles’ Collected Complaints)

I see how that makes sense in game terms but the flavor of dragging people through spikes not hurting them at all is just painful to me. The ways in which 5.5e seems to be pushing back against "rulings not rules" goes against how I like my D&D and making DM rulings that further that even more is...

    D&D 5E (2024) D&D 2024 Rules Oddities (Kibbles’ Collected Complaints)

A lot of the weapon juggling stuff can be shut down by the DM with a simple "no, stop being silly." But a lot of people ARE legitimately confused about how the TWF system works when you combine WMs and feats and the line between what's an exploit and what isn't is not completely obvious...

D&D 5E (2024) Motley Fool Prediction: New Dungeons & Dragons Edition Won't Help Hasbro Much

Honestly after seeing what their great expectations for D&D accomplished, moving the brand onto life support would probably be for the best for the hobby. But I don't see it, D&D has enough name recognition to make more computer games, Lego, and all the rest.

D&D 5E (2024) Motley Fool Prediction: New Dungeons & Dragons Edition Won't Help Hasbro Much

Yeah and I think 5.5e is really make or break for that. I can imagine subscribing to the online tools if they play a number of different system with 5.5e just being part of the rotation with CoC and BitD or what have you. For the online tools to really make the big bucks they need a dedicated...

D&D 5E (2024) Learning to Love the Background System

OK, that makes more sense. You can just toggle on and off as many skills as you want in the character sheet and overrule the tool and change any number you want after the character is made? In any case, they can pry my paper character sheets out of my cold dead hands.
