    Modernist and Postmodernist RPGs?

I'm no historian of philosophy, but I know that Descartes is considered the first figure of modern Philosophy. Except by the Neo-Thomists, of course. But they like to emphasize the continuity between the patristic, medieval and present day thinkers.

The D&D Great Wheel of the Planes and Moral Ethical Relativism

Hmmm. I'm drawing on Kripke's Naming and Necessity here. I don't think it is an analytic a prioricity. It's kind of like when you christen a boat- you know the boat's name without having to investigate it. That kind of a priori. I don't know what it is called. The "stipulative a priori"...

The D&D Great Wheel of the Planes and Moral Ethical Relativism

Mardoc, This seems to be an example of a contingent a priori statement. I think the classic example is the metal rod in Paris that was used as the standard metre. (It no longer is the standard, but let's pretend it were.) Given that it is the standard metre, no empirical investigation is...

This is what impressed the Adversary (copied from the Plots and Places thread) Originally posted by Sepulchrave II on 04-18-09 Dug this one out as it's topical. One of Nwm's more complicated spells… Green Benediction Transmutation [Green] Spellcraft DC: 0 [1276] Components: V, S Casting...

    Aeon (updated 10/9/14)

    1. The map is attached to the first post of "that thread that has all of the Wyrish updates". 2. Soneillon was killed during the battle of Afqithan. Said battle occurred off-screen. Sep is better than Vance. I'll bump the other thread.

    D&D 4E The Quadratic Problem—Speculations on 4e

Do you have Star Wars Saga? I don't, but I heard that the starting hp were higher. Dunno what they did with BAB progressions. Anyone know? And how about the method of devising combats. Was it based on 1 monster per encounter, or was it 5 opponents per encounter? Really, having 4 or 5...

    D&D 4E The Quadratic Problem—Speculations on 4e

Well, you started the thread. Maybe we went off-topic a little, but perhaps you gained something from our discursions. What do you want to do next? What power curve do you want to explore, and how do you think we should stat up the initial brutes? I'm really wondering about the AC business...

    D&D 4E The Quadratic Problem—Speculations on 4e

I think everyone who has played or DMed a campaign has a "feel" about what particular levels are like. If you get the right numbers for them, then perhaps you can identify what causes the change in feel. The relative power of character classes changes changes too much; the increase in power...

The D&D Great Wheel of the Planes and Moral Ethical Relativism

Kudos, Mardoc, for introducing the Euthyphro into the discussion! I am not sure that I agree with the following: My take on objective morality is that it makes values like objects- something that exists independently of your perceptions or preferences. A table has an objective existence...

    D&D 4E The Quadratic Problem—Speculations on 4e

If we don't know what the baseline power curve is, we are lacking a crucial bit of information about what a change would be. Before we speculate on what might be, we need to be clear about what is.

    D&D 4E The Quadratic Problem—Speculations on 4e

I don't quite get the google spreadsheet. I'm trying to figure out how a battle between a 17th level and a 16th level fighter would go - supposedly the power ratio is 3.31. But I'm having trouble with the numbers. For instance, the F17 is supposed to make 2.1 hits per round against the F16...

    D&D 4E The Quadratic Problem—Speculations on 4e

What nonsense! Next you'll be suggesting names for these four distinct quartiles of play- Gritty fantasy, Heroic fantasy, Wuxia, and Superheroes. Or something. Sheesh.

    A 30th-level Party needs 50th-level Monsters...

But when you are the creator of high level material, you can create material that fits a quadratic progression if you felt like it. You felt free to "correct" the challenge ratings of various WotC monsters - you were also defining feats and class abilities for epic characters. Don't tell me...

    A 30th-level Party needs 50th-level Monsters...

I liked your teachings about Challenge rating much more when they were predicated on a quadratic power curve instead of a cubic power curve. And, as I posted in the Quadratic Speculation thread, I hope that will be the way that 4E does it. It would be nice if the numbers are based on very...

    D&D 4E The Quadratic Problem—Speculations on 4e

Well then, if PCs don't have an exponential power curve, then neither should monsters. And if the power curve is too steep at high levels, the higher order factors should be scaled back; i.e. the cubic term makes the curve rise too high. I think that a quadratic power curve would be ideal.

    Using Scrolls while Invisible

You think like I do! :) I've often thought that invisibility should also inflict blindness on the recipient. Either that or invisibility gives the benefit of detect invisibility for the duration. The One Ring in Lord of the Rings enabled the Ring Bearer to see Ring Wraiths, I believe, who...

    D&D 4E The Quadratic Problem—Speculations on 4e

But if power doubled every level, it should be about 500,000 times, right? 4000 times the combat power of a 1st-level fighter should occur at 13th level.

Game Breaker Spells - What are they?

Or have speak with dead work, but work it so the legal system doesn't accept information gained by those spells. Because of ways that magically acquired evidence can be tampered with- or maybe it counts as an "illegal search". Or maybe eyewitness testimony isn't accepted if there is no chance...

    WotC Blogs II

I thought that an "adjacent system" was something like grappling, tripping or sundering. Maybe AoOs or Turning Undead. I think he's talking about feats that invoked those systems somehow. Like sundering with an attack of opportunity or something. Or getting a bonus to your AC if someone takes...
