This was my experience too. Most games freely used bits of UA and the others like they used dragon magazine content. Used what they wanted into their game with DM oversight, laughed at other bits for being crap, over powered. or just pointless.

BECMI I totally agree. But having recently been showing people early edition games, 1e/2e have complexities like min/max for races, different rules for dual/multi-classing depending on race, class restrictions for race, information in general is scattered through the players and even the DMG...

In second edition, there is Everfull Quiver, (rare, from the priests compendium) and i think 3.5 or pathfinder has Abundant Ammunition. They dont create ammo, but allow you to fire every round without consuming ammo.

I play/DM a mix of first and second that I just call early edition. I really liked the bulk of changes, and improved organization but I love the feel of the original class variants (i.e. druid, illusionist) which I felt was lost with second edition. I'd never stop using many of the tables/text...

If you are using non weapon proficiency, or some psionics, or generic strength ability checks, then 11 to 13 would sometimes matter. There are probably a few edge cases in modules, monsters or items where a roll under strength might be needed. But in general, I'd agree, like most ability scores...

The price point with randomness made it a non sale for me. Though as I have a lot of mini's already, so it does have to be a decent deal to get my interest.

It is not ridiculous to be offended by this comic: It falls far away from your description of 'PA's guns'. That isn't an insensitive bit of comedy, that's a shallow, insincere, condescending apology that belittles the people it claims to be apologizing to. It also makes them (PA) look like smug...

You might see one or two of those stereotypes, but I think it's confirmation bias if you are seeing them everywhere as the bulk of gamers.
