    Dragonbane general thread

I was on the fence about Dragonbane but this thread convinced me to pull the trigger and grab the core set! My group needs to finish a Shadowdark campaign we just started first, but we’ll be diving into this right after!

I am surprised I am still excited for Daggerheart

I was initially interested and followed the early play tests, but the game just failed to win me over. I didn’t hate it, and I would be willing to try it out if someone I knew wanted to run it, but I personally wouldn’t choose it over D&D.

Shadowdark Shadowdark or Worlds w/o numbers?

Yes, I think I will. I think the only ‘missing’ class that might come up would be some kind of monk, which have some Greyhawk history. What would you recommend for monk, if someone is dying to play one?

Shadowdark Shadowdark or Worlds w/o numbers?

What are some of the features or elements that make WWN your preferred game?

    My "Savage" Experience

I used SW to run a 2-year “Gamma World” campaign (cribbing a lot from the SW Darwin’s World and Broken Earth books). One house rule I did, that helped with some of the lack of damage progress in combat, was have armor be ablative. Since it was the wasteland and everything was junky and prone...

Shadowdark Shadowdark or Worlds w/o numbers?

I’ve started to build out the future game using Shadowdark and I’m very happy how easy it’s been to dive right in. We’re still finishing up a 5e adventure, but we’re very excited to give Shadowdark a go! I’m also amazed how much content Kelsey has made freely available, but I certainly plan to...

    D&D 5E (2014) Skill Ranking

In my games, I use dynamic abilities with skills, so an Athletics check could be Athletics + Str or Athletics + Dex, depending on what you’re trying to do. So right there that invalidates Acrobatics as a distinct skill. I voted for History, but I think it’s a weird skill. I wish it had been...

Shadowdark Shadowdark or Worlds w/o numbers?

Yeah sounds like Shadowdark is the clear consensus here! Thanks for all the input!

D&D General Demetrios1453 Plays the Gold Box Games

Thanks again for taking us on another adventure down Gold Box memory lane! The tower was probably my least favorite dungeon of Curse. It felt very claustrophobic and the drow were kind of repetitive. I think that was further hampered by Akabar, who I remember being more detrimental than...

Shadowdark Shadowdark or Worlds w/o numbers?

Hello! So one of the groups I run games for is wanting to take a break from the usual 5e and try something more old school. Shadowdark seems to be the early frontrunner, but Worlds without Number also intrigues me. I'm thinking of adapting the good ol' Village of Hommlet for the adventure, which...

RPG Crowdfunding News – Voltron, Evil Dead, Traveller, and more

"Form Blazing Sword!" "Nope, sorry I botched the roll." - Me trying to play Voltron, probably.

Why a rapier is bad for an adventurer

As an aside, this discussion reminds me that I’be always wanted to have weapon damage be class based, with variations for 2-handers vs 1-handed/shield. That way your character could flavor their weapon to anything they think fits their character without losing optimization. But I know...

Level Up (A5E) LotR characters in A5E?

Gandalf the Grey Heritage - Planetouched (Aasimar) Culture - Forsaken Background - Exile Class - 9th level Bard Archetype - Lore Weaver Destiny - Return to Glory My Thoughts: Gandalf is tricky and could be built a number of ways. Though he's called a "Wizard", Tolkien's magic is far more...

Level Up (A5E) LotR characters in A5E?

Samwise Gamgee Heritage - Halfling Culture - Villager Background - Farmer Class - 4th-level Marshal Archetype - Lionheart Destiny - Devotion My thoughts: Samwise is all about building up others and protecting them, and a Lionheart Marshal seemed like a good way to create that effect. He will...

Thank you, Snarf! You are the hero we deserve or need or however the Batman quote goes!

What makes a Hero a Legend?

As a long time lurker, semi-poster (14 years! Wow the time flies) I’ve been curious how the site rankings work… village to explorer to adventurer to hero to legend. Is it based on post count? Reaction score? Something else? And at what rank are people allowed custom signatures, or is that a...

    D&D 5E (2024) You're not planning on getting 2024 D&D? Why is that?

For those saying it feels like it’s moving in a 4e direction, I can definitely understand your point of view, but as someone who really liked a lot from 4e I have to say the way they’re doing it is at best, half-baked and unlikely to make you or me very thrilled. For instance, take Weapon...

Level Up (A5E) Playing A5E classes alongside 5e and ToV classes?

I’ve done a lot of mixing and matching with 5e and A5e in my own campaign, and I plan to incorporate some aspects from ToV, but I think it’s important to keep each character class, heritage/ancestry/species limited to their own source books. You can try a little blending (such as with...

    D&D 5E (2024) You're not planning on getting 2024 D&D? Why is that?

Yes, again for me the new Monster Manual would have to be really compelling, especially since I now own Level Up’s Monster book, 5 Kobold Press monster books, the Monster Manual Expandeds, and Flee Mortals.

    D&D 5E (2024) You're not planning on getting 2024 D&D? Why is that?

I have a lot of the same reasons many posters here have already said, but I think there are 2 main ones that stand out: 1- Wotc and Hasbro. I really haven’t liked much of what they’ve been putting out in content lately, it feels very “bland” to me. And the actions taken by the corporate...
