RPG Fiction: A Review of Critical Role: Vox Machina – Kith & Kin

Couldn’t disagree more with this review. I’m about finished with the book and it’s mostly been a tedious slog. Finishing it just so I can give a proper review. What a disappointment.

D&D 5E (2014) How do you handle secret doors?

For passive check to be applicable the player should have declared the ongoing action of their character. “searching for secret doors“, “looking for traps” etc. If your character has no declared action there is nothing to resolve.

D&D 5E (2014) How do you handle secret doors?

You could think that, but the quote specifically says “characters”. And the difference between “in the moment“ and “over time” is precisely what is being differentiated by passive and non-passive checks.

D&D 5E (2014) How do you handle secret doors?

Incredible to see WotC also trip over the word passive and assume that the opposite is “active”. The characters are always actively doing stuff, just one is over time and the other is instant. What an unhelpful word choice for such a fundamental aspect of the game.

D&D 5E (2014) Wait...do adventure modules come with soundtracks, now?

I also gave it a try a while back but found the UI too limiting. I wanted to set up a soundboard to quickly switch between the different sound fx, but the UI made that more difficult than it should have been IMO. Perhaps it‘s gotten better, because the sound fx system by itself was fantastic.

D&D 5E (2014) Just Get Rid of "Saving Throws"

The thing I dislike about saving throws is that it assumes the player’s action. The player has no opportunity to offer an alternative reaction to the event. Now, for many events the only reaction is to try and leap out of danger, hence the frequent dexterity save. But I still feel it would be...

D&D General G4's New D&D Show Is Called 'Invitation to Party'

That logo is definitely a bit unfortunate. However B Dave was great as a player in this Call of Cthulhu one shot (all around great table IMHO and, Becca, the keeper ran it with great style).

    D&D 5E (2014) The Debate of "Canon" in D&D 5E

The biggest turn-off to me of the Forgotten Realms is that they’re too well remembered! The canon really bogs it down IMHO. I wish WotC would explore the rest of the world rather than muck around endlessly on the Sword Coast and surrounding environs. It’s all so stale and well trodden.

D&D General What are you prepping for your next D&D session? (+)

I dream about prepping a session. My old table went their separate ways at the beginning of covid when our campaign ended, and I‘ve wanted to try and start something new but I don’t want to be online and I don’t want to open my house to strangers just yet (SC being on the worse end of...

D&D General Are Hit Points Meat? (Redux): D&D Co-Creator Saw Hit Points Very Differently

Falling damage is one of the most egregious cock ups in the rules IMHO. It doesn’t take any account of momentum. The dice should scale with size (being a rough equivalent to mass). So: Tiny, no damage. Small, Xd4 Medium, Xd8 Large, Xd10 Huge, Xd12 Gigantic, Xd20 And X should scale more...

D&D General Are Hit Points Meat? (Redux): D&D Co-Creator Saw Hit Points Very Differently

Precisely, the hits are landing, but your character’s HP (i.e. skill, luck etc) deflect the blow enough that the physical damage is minimal, scratches, bruises, singes etc. Until that runs out and a potentially lethal blow finally lands taking your character down. This is where healing potions...

D&D 5E (2014) Breakin' the Law! Thoughts on Rules in 5e

Of course rules have a purpose, they provide a common ground for this game of make believe. The most fundamental of them being the ability check. Everyone agrees that this is the mechanism to resolve uncertainty and the game can proceed. Everything else is tinkering around the edges.

    D&D 5E (2014) Max HP?

I’ve decided that in future I’m just going to go with 20+Dex for bosses and 15+Dex for tough guys. Leaving important NPC initiative entirely to chance often wrecks their threat.
