House rule to Replace the flat DC15 for massive damage

Fair enough, but I still beg to disagree. Magic is simply the most expedient example to illustrate the point. High-critical weapons can also get damage into the low orbit. Consider the raging orc barbarian (24 Str) wielding a greataxe and scoring a critical. Save DC= 3d12+30-Con. Bearing in...

    To balance high level mages.

Looks like this thread has been resurrected from the dead... That is a very severe matter of interpretation. Read the ELH, p. 108, under 'Dealing with Time Stop'. The strict interpretation (i.e. not even the standard interpretation) is that you can't use touch/ranged touch attacks. An even...

A query: Harm House rule users ONLY please

If he'd have Harmed it to 4hp, that would have been funnier...(incidentally, does a Maximised Harm automatically reduce the creature to 4hp? What about Empowered Harm?) Back on topic...I don't think it is that good an idea, for the reasons listed above. Neither is there a *logical* reason why...

House rule to Replace the flat DC15 for massive damage

The major side-effect of tweaking the Massive Damage save is that high-level spellcasters become a whole lot more powerful. For example, by 11th level, the wizard can throw a Maximised Fireball for 60 points of damage. If the damage isn't bad enough, you have to take a Fort save or die anyway...

    stupid PC names

The current game I'm running is quite good. Some of the previous ones have had some classics. I didn't mind, because the group was not that serious (I mean, it was semi-serious). The best (worst?) were Burne (not too bad, but everyone insisted on calling the character Bernie), Ima Goon (my...

    Firearms- Ranged touch attack perhaps?

Sure. But a fireball isn't. Neither is a Meteor Storm, a 60' tall giant, an 80' long scorpion or seeing your friends turn to dust after a Chained Distintegrate spell.

Can High Level Parties really die?

The best way would be to kill the PCs (using absurdly powerful monsters, dimensional anchors etc.) then trapping the souls. Open a gate to Baator (or the Nine Hells or wherever) and throw said souls through the gate. Or simply trade them to Asmodeus direct.

    Firearms- Ranged touch attack perhaps?

Absolutely. So why is the DMG firearm Exotic, and the bow Martial?

Funny Animal D20 anyone? (MM2 rant)

On yakfolk: I always thought that yakfolk was in ancient Oriental mythology. Much older than Birthright, Al-Qadim... In general, though, the humanoid thingies tend to be the most *sensible* of the monsters (exception: loxo) and, in most cases, are converted from previous editions (though of...

The Dark Spells of Dambrath (ENWorld Version)

I love the flavour text. Unfortunately, the tendency is for these very cool, very powerful and very dark spells is to totally overdo it. Unfortunately, that has happened. Let me just boil down the mechanical effects of the 9th level version: If the target *makes* his save, he becomes Evil...

    Disintigrate and Hide Life

The best bet for the pile of dust would be a Silent Still Limited Wish. Emulate a Reincarnation and you have a brand new body. Of course, you do lose a level, so you might wish to hang around for a True Res: if you ever get one.

    Miracle again

Surely this depends on the deity? There is absolutely no reason why a cleric of Erythnul could not go around slaughtering people. On Innate Miracle: Granted, but by 27th level, nearly any spellcasting character is going to be insanely powerful.

NEED HELP QUICK! (by 4:45 pm CST)

I would typically go with Symbol. It is a very useful and very versatile spell: the only problem is that the DCs are not going to be so great (due to lack of Spell Focus). Horrid Wilting is a good standard assault spell, especially as the Fort save can hit those pesky rogues. Maze is always a...

What's the toughest demon I can spring on 11th level PCs and give them a chance?

A 20th level sorceror without the whole fiendwurm enhancement would wipe the floor with the PCs: Time Stop (maximised with Rod of Greater Maximisation, T&B) 4x Meteor Swarm (two maximised with RoGM) Power Word: Kill (chained, from Rod of Greater Chaining, T&B). That should eliminate them...

    CR for this custom monster?

Purely based on DM intuition, I would eyeball a CR6.

    Non-good assassin

Hmm... The good mayor turned to the noble characters and explained to them the threat of the necromancer. He carefully told them that to preserve the village under his protection, the PCs would need to slay the vile necromancer before he could raise his army of undead. As an added incentive...

    Adventurer Class

The engine shows its faults when it details the lists of existing classes. Clerics, sorcerors and wizards come out as below average, when actual play reveals that they are actually rather strong classes. Conversely, the monk and bard come out on top, whilst play reveals that the monk is...

Headband of Intellect question! (My Int is too low to figure this out!)

If it is increasing your Intelligence, it must be making you smarter- by the very definition of Intelligence. It is also making you learn faster, as this is a subcategory of Intelligence (hence the control of skill points). There is a difference between 'temporary' Int changes and Headbands...

Headband of Intellect question! (My Int is too low to figure this out!)

I rule that if Int rising from a permanent magical item (as opposed to Fox's Cunning) then skill points are granted. Effectively, the character has a consistently higher Intelligence score, and can learn faster. The problem with the 'losing Int means you lose skill points when the Headband...

    My Monk: A Poll

This is clearly modelled on the psychic warrior, but is quite a bit weaker than the psychic warrior- which is hardly overpowered itself. In terms of hit dice and bonus feats, the two are on a par. However, with the exception of the monk having better skills and saves, it is all downhill from...
