    D&D 5E (2024) Do you plan to adopt D&D5.5One2024Redux?

I think 5E is very good and the new rules are a definite improvement. (Even if I'm disappointed by some of the community feedback and a handful of dev choices.) As a dwarf once said, "You have my axe!"

D&D 5E (2014) (House Rules) All weapons do the same damage... Who has made this work?

The problem is that the player is bored doing the same thing every round. I think the solution here isn't class-based damage. (Not that there's anything wrong with that. Right now I'm playing 13th Age!) Because "every weapon does the same damage" doesn't provide any additional variety. I think...

D&D General How Was Your Last Session?

This is the start of my 13th Age campaign! I'm the GM. 5 players. We'll be running Eyes of the Stone Thief, one of the best adventures ever written. Hopefully it plays as well as it reads. We had our Session 0. Two of them, in fact. Character generation from a mechanical standpoint was fairly...

D&D General You are given the reigns: what do you do?

For real, though, here's where I'd go with it: First, NO DMG. Why? Read on. 1) PHB: Mashup of 5E, 4E, 13th Age, and Shadow of the Demon Lord. It would use 5E's bounded accuracy, advantage/disadvantage, and cap on overall complexity. From 4E it would take powers, power sources, healing surges...

Step 1: (Re)publish the Book of Erotic Fantasy. Done.

D&D General DMs...How do you end a campaign in a satisfying way?

    Great point. I agree completely.

D&D General DMs...How do you end a campaign in a satisfying way?

Agreed. I call this "campaign pacing". I don't think it gets talked about enough. I learned about campaign pacing the hard way in my first 1-20 level campaign when we reached 20th level and still had another 20 sessions of story to get through. Now I try to be ruthless in cutting out...

D&D General DMs...How do you end a campaign in a satisfying way?

My just completed Dragon Heist/Deck of Many things campaign has an open ended quality to it, as the characters are in Tier 3. I have another campaign in progress that's likely to end in Tier 3. I've been considering bringing them together in Tier 4 to tie up some loose ends in both.

D&D General DMs...How do you end a campaign in a satisfying way?

Thank you! I take the same approach as you in crafting a campaign. But specifically with endings -- the last 1 to 3 sessions that should be the climax of the story -- I am a nervous wreck. So hard to get right. For me, anyway.

D&D General DMs...How do you end a campaign in a satisfying way?

Last week I ended a campaign. It was the second long term 5E campaign that I've ended. The first campaign was 122 sessions and took the PCs to 20th level and 7 epic boons. The end was satisfying in that none of us had actually completed a 20th level campaign. The climax was a rather turgid fight...

D&D General How Was Your Last Session?

The Twilight: 2000 campaign I've been a player in for the last 10 1/2 months finally ended in a zombie apocalypse. I am not joking. Apparently even post-apocalypses can have apocalypses. I really, really, really like the mechanics and the world of T2K. I could have kept playing for a long time...

D&D General How Was Your Last Session?

My Dragon Heist/Deck of Many Things mashup campaign has concluded after 60 sessions. How did it go? Read on! The three player characters started this final session at 12th level: Half-orc cavalier fighter, halfling swashbuckler rogue, and half-elf evoker wizard/grave cleric. With them was an...

    Dragon Reflections #74

I've never seen this issue before but it sounds like a banger.

    D&D 5E (2024) So what's happening with Ranger?

I was shocked and disappointed that the 2024 rules update never tried to address the fact that ranger's do not have a unique mechanic. Paladin's have smite, barbarians have rage, sorcerers have metamagic, druids have wild shape, rogues have sneak attack and cunning action, etc. Rangers have a...

D&D General How Was Your Last Session?

59th session of my Dragon Heist/Deck of Many Things mashup. Three player characters of 12th level: Half-orc cavalier fighter, halfling swashbuckler rogue, and half-elf evoker wizard/grave cleric. With them is an NPC drow mage. In this short session, the characters emerged from the collapsing...

Those are all fair criticisms. But. I own the book and it's beautiful.

D&D General How Was Your Last Session?

Twilight: 2000. We're nearing the end of the campaign after about 9 months. Normally, I'm the DM. Here, I've been the player. And it's been a pleasure. In recent sessions we've secured a prison as a home base, populated it with endangered civilians, and gathered an arsenal of tanks and mobile...

D&D General How Was Your Last Session?

Sessions 56 of my Neverwinter campaign. 10th level drow evoker wizard, human genie warlock, half orc vengeance paladin. Short version: The characters are assaulting the tower of an evil wizard. And it's not going well. They had some bad luck and frankly are using poor strategy. For the wizard...

D&D General How Was Your Last Session?

58th session of my Dragon Heist/Deck of Many Things mashup. This is the climax of the whole campaign! Three player characters of 11th level: Half-orc cavalier fighter, halfling swashbuckler rogue, and half-elf evoker wizard/grave cleric. With them is an NPC drow wizard--a romantic interest of...

Ben Riggs: 'The Golden Age of TTRPGs is Dead'

Yeah. No. This post is entirely correct and completely wrong, all at the same time. Many of these predictions will come true--but it doesn't portend a dark age for the hobby. The funding, publishing, and marketing landscape is utterly different than it was 10, 20, or 50 years ago. TTRPGs will...
