D&D 5E (2014) GAMA Trade Show and Game Developer Conference start Monday - announcement Tomorrow?

Actually what they could do is release the mods designed for 5th with free online conversion content. It wouldn't be hard to hire a couple of programmers to design an app that converts an encounter to a different version either and then release it for free or charge a little for it.

D&D 5E (2014) GAMA Trade Show and Game Developer Conference start Monday - announcement Tomorrow?

Sounds like the DMG, with the exception of the magic item stuff will be more in line with what Paizo did. All the rules for play will be in the PHB and the DMG will be more to help direct the DM in storytelling.

what isn't an rpg that should be?

Silent Hill would be more combat intensive at times compared to WoD. Not necessarily on the players side as far as attacking, but dodging attacks and trying to get away. I would almost think it would be better to use a modified BRP styled off of CoC since you have sanity issues as well.

Give a shout out to Legend of the 5 Rings.

L5R is an amazing setting with a lot of history and probably the most history generated by the fans. That being said we have to remember that L5R is first and foremost a setting for the card game. The story is still key to the RPGs, but RPGs don't get to drive the core story as much and are...

what isn't an rpg that should be?

Thundercats was one I always thought should have an RPG. Harry Potter, but she is against role-playing from what I read somewhere. Narnia would be interesting. An IP game that use to exist (briefly) but should be brought back... Dune.

Would/do you continue to buy RPG books even when you have no one to play with?

Way more often than I should. I just spent about 200 within the last month on stuff I will probably never play. A few will pay off if I decide to sell them later (looking at you 50th Ann. Dr Who book), but most will be read, sit on a shelf, and if ever sold will be at a loss.

D&D 5E (2014) Initial D&D Next Releases Showing Up on Barnes & Noble Website

Paizo has charged $10 for the core books since day one, unless you subscribe and then you get them for free.

D&D 5E (2014) Initial D&D Next Releases Showing Up on Barnes & Noble Website

Which is what I think is the real contention here. People want to make sure that their $50 is buying a lot compared to what it can get them if they go to another company. If I'm paying $50 to get one book, but can get in essence two books for the same price then I'm more likely to buy the two...

D&D 5E (2014) Initial D&D Next Releases Showing Up on Barnes & Noble Website

There's a difference though. Pathfinder core book has both player and GM info in it. It is effectively two books in one. If WotC sticks to tradition then it's $50 for a book designed solely for the player. Though if they are breaking tradition and it does cover both player and GM stuff then...

D&D 5E (2014) Initial D&D Next Releases Showing Up on Barnes & Noble Website

I agree with you Morrus. I for one have posted the news on at least one Facebook group page in addition to those I've told offline. This news spread pretty fast. One thing to think about is that it is getting very close to when FLGS will start being asked to pre-order. Most distributors...

    Numenera Cypher Question

It's not you. The book could use some cleaning up to make it read better and easier to understand.

    Numenera Cypher Question

Cypher level establishes the quality of the item, how effective it is and sets the difficulty to affect an opponent if applicable. Though you are close concerning it being used to determine difficulty trying to use it. If you're worried about the cypher's effect upon the game then remember...

    Help Me Find a System

You might take a look at Astonishing Swordsmen & Sorcerers of Hyperborea which is a retroclone focused on sword & sorcery along the lines of Conan and such. 13th Age is good, very easy to pick up, and currently limited in products so don't have to worry about getting a bunch of books.

The Quest for the "One True System" Is It a Myth or Something More?

I agree with you. We are definitely still living in the early days of roleplaying and there is a lot of development and evolution that still has to come.

The Quest for the "One True System" Is It a Myth or Something More?

You bring up good points. One thing to think about is that ENWorld was originally designed to focus on one system. It is interesting that it has evolved to now cover more. First focusing on d20 stuff and now pretty much whatever is popular gets mentioned.

The Quest for the "One True System" Is It a Myth or Something More?

You really can't say it's a myth and then follow it up with a statement implying a person find one that works well for everyone in their group. That's kind of a paradox if you think about it. Not trying to be facetious, but if the game works well for everyone and that's all you ever play then...

Introductory RPG for a 5yr. Old

I will second Little Wizards which is definitely geared for kids. Fairy Tales Deluxe and Harvester is good too. Others I found on DriveThruRPG that I don't think have been mentioned yet: Hero Kids has had a lot of supplements. Fantasy Adventures for Kids is another. Fuzzy Knights Woodland...

The Quest for the "One True System" Is It a Myth or Something More?

I understood, which is why I tried my best to ensure my tone was neutral in my reply. I agree. I definitely think that it is better for a specific setting, meaning popular IP, to be designed with the rules focused to aid it instead of the setting forced upon the rules. Bad examples that fit...

The Quest for the "One True System" Is It a Myth or Something More?

There's a difference though in branding something in line with a product or product line, which d20 is really a form of branding, and copying the system. I agree that sticking the d20 logo on stuff that wasn't really using the game was pretty dumb on a lot of peoples' part. It was a commercial...
